The bowline! Probably the most important single tool of the sailor. As a long-term instructor I’m here to tell you that it’s among the more challenging items to teach - if you’re tying it like a sailor, that is. There’s many a fancy way of doing the job, but the one used by all serious professionals at sea is the one used by Admiral Nelson, and I’ll bet John Paul Jones favoured it as well. Once you’ve cracked it, you’ll never fluff a bowline on a dark night again.
