David I'm curious how well piston fit drawers deal with moisture and humidity when it comes to wood movement. Very VERY excellent craftsmanship Something I'm aspiring too. The piston fit trays just make me worry though how it would handle humid weather.

I saw in one of your videos where you were using a small brass miter box. I was wondering where did you got it? Thanks David

Hi David, Would the soft close work if the tray was made with thicker stock and the box was made with a thinner material? Basically Make the carcass out of the stock you used for the tray, and make the tray with the original carcass stock.

Dear David, Can you please tell me what wood you used to make this box? Thanks in advance for your reply. Kind regards

Hi David, These have been great videos. Thanks for uploading them. I appreciate the production value in these--it's very helpful for a beginner like me! And, of course, your abilities, technique, and knowledge are all impeccable. Quick--and perhaps ridiculous--question, though: It seems like waiting on the piston-fit tray would start to become annoying. Granted, the tray made in the videos didn't have as much weight as the tray already made, but it still took both trays a few seconds to settle completely. Do you really use that for your work, or is it more of a show piece?

I discovered your channel the other day, and have really enjoyed your techniques. However, something has bothered me, and it has taken a few days for me to recognize the problem. As a kid, my Orthodontist had a very similar mallet that he used to beat the bands onto my teeth...Every time you tap the wood, I cringe! If you used a wood mallet, it wouldn't matter a bit. Looking forward to more videos, thank you! Tom

Hi Tom, I wore braces for 10 years, not nice. So I can understand your feelings entirely. All the best, David.

I'm sorry, I'm a such negative person, I'm going to tell you the bad things you need to hear first. That's just me, so feel free to ignore... but, I really do not like that piston fit tray - at all. My favorite little boxes are shoe shine boxes, minimal weight, maximum capacity, but must support half the weight of a gentleman standing on it buffing his shoes. There is a tray at the top to hold his horse hair shoe-shine brushes, it must slip right in - not take five minutes to settle in. The box you have is not a racing motorcycle engine where you are trying to achieve a two ten-thousandths of an inch fit - I've built both. For one a "piston fit" is a virtue, for the other it is a vice. Install, very small, very slight, air equalization channels between box and lid in the middle of each edge and everything will be perfect in deed - it only has to look neat. Another benefit, you will actually have to take less wood off of the tray if air pressures can equalize between the air pressure between lid and lower chamber. A little bit of what is keeping the lid from closing smoothly is air pressure from the lid itself that has nowhere to go except squeeze out through the last crack of the lid. Those air relief channels, they do not have to be very big, they only have to look like you put them their on purpose. Go ahead, try it, prove me wrong.
