Shimano Deore LX SL-M060 3x7 was and is the best shifter. All you needed were two thumbs. All the other trigger scissors shifters bound up on my winter gloves or fingers. Today i still use XT friction shifters. The BOX shifter sounds like salvation! I'm ordering today! Great review!!!!

Seth, thank you for the review. I went ahead and got that mech (long version) and shifter. It is awesome! I swapped my wife's 2x9 to 1x11 (11-50T cassette) it shifts crisp, after I dialed indexing. Clutch is working fine, keeps chain tight. So far after few rides, all I can say it is working perfectly fine, and it is nice that this is not shimano or sram, kinda rear breed :)

A well thought out review Seth. I appreciated the honesty. The other reviews I've read for box said that the clutch tension was lacking, so that would explain the dropped chains.

Thank you for the video! The feedback you give about the chain falling off at lower speeds makes sense for this system. As I understand it the clutch is progressive, so as the cage swings more aggressively you will get more clutch, and better retention. Higher cage rates will make the clutch work better. I found the shifter to be different but ok. Keep up the good work man!

I have a box unit on my bike since last Sunday, could not really test it on trails because I wait for a new crank and bearings for that. How ever I have two mayor complains about it. 1. The drive train is made for a cable routing from the seatstay. It will works for routing from the chainstay too but it is not good. My cable is beneath the chainstay , this will make your cable rub your on to the frame. I never saw something like that. 2. Is more related to what seth already said that it can cause problems with your tumb , in my case it is the other way around. Also that is for us who use always gloves more important , most gloves are useless because the stitching is near the position on your thumb where you push the shifter. This can lead to pain after some short usage. Last thing is more related to Magura brakes who have the standard lever , with this it is impossible to mount the shifter on the right place for easy shifting. I will modify a shift mix to solve that , maybe ...

I like the idea. I ride Transition bikes because they're rider owned, etc. The price is pretty steep. Like the same as an XTR set or two XT derailleurs... It's a few months until I upgrade from 10-11 speed but I will seriously consider the Box One when the time comes.

Good chain retention is just something people have come to expect in recent years. I have run a Shimano Zee 1x10 and a Sram GX 1x11 setup in recent years and have not dropped a chain once with either. The thought of dropping a chain is enough to put me off! It just feels like a failure, particularly as the Box One is equipped with a clutch system.
@lukewood8466
6 жыл бұрын
The reason why you dont drop the chain on rough stuff is because your suspension adds a significant amount of tension on the chain as it uses its travel, the chain will drop much easier when riding stuff that shakes you around without using travel

thanks for the honest review. I'm a person that always tries to support the underdog companies and will pay a bit more to do so... but that's a lot of $$ when from the get-go I don't like the shifter design. they should have flipped the thumb shifter over, so you can rest your thumb on it and don't have to move your thumb over the pad. that way you don't have to move your thumb to shift up or down. if that makes sense...

I say that's personal preference. I was a shimano guy for years but then I started using SRAM a lot more over the last year. I like that direct feel you get out of SRAM, I used to think that Shimano felt buttery smooth but now going back to it I find it feels vague. At this point I don't think you can go wrong with either though.

Wild Outdoor Living that's true but I've ridden many sram groups and I'm just not a huge fan of how the sram stuff clunks into gear rather than slides smoothly into it. but I definitely agree that it is personal preference.

Fredrik HL I might try it next drivetrain. Considerably more expensive here and not easy to get. Hardly ever see it here, so most of us stick to the well-known Shimano. Could buy online I guess, but deliveries don't always arrive, if they do they're often held up in customs and if it needs parts (crunch a derailleur for example) have to go back online and take that risk.

With Slx 675 Riding down rough trails with gears can drop a chain. Smaller chain ring too. For me a chain guide is a must. So if you ride without a chain guide you should ride down with a higher gears, 27 cog or similar will drop the chain even with a 36t ring, steeper and rougher it is more chance there is for it to happen.

How would you describe the amount of trail noise this derailleur makes? Is it significantly quieter or louder than a comparable sram or shimano derailleur? I'd assume it would be slightly louder if it has less chain tension than other offerings, look forward to hearing more about the durability of the box shifter as more people put it through long term use!

If I had the $200 to blow I would totally buy one. My derailleur is. Well old rusty and has parts from several different derailleurs in it. But it works remarkably well seeing as when I put it on the bike I had to get it until siezed first. But I enjoyed it and learned a bit while working on it. The bike it's self was rusted and siezed as well but it is all greased and oiled and riding smoothly. Just not perfect hahaha but then what is?
