Have a dog who will pass you a ball, toy or retrieve object, but won’t hold onto the object for any length of time? The Box Technique is one way to increase your dog’s duration on a hold. Many dogs drop the object early because of social expectations or other Feelings associated with giving the item to hand, so in this method, we ask for “give to box” instead of “give to hand”. Once we’ve built the concept of duration, we can quickly fade out the box.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS:
* Pick up a retrieve object
* Chin rest with duration
REQUIRED OBJECTS:
Very low and wide box like the top of a copy paper box
You’ll see here that I flow between several different methods because each method works on a different aspect of the retrieve and hold.
* Asking dog to walk and hold - establish a firmer grip, moving forward rather than upward with the item
* Chin rest with toy - associate stillness with the act of retrieving
* Chin rest on box - advantages of chin rest + box
This approach is referenced as “the Pytlovany Box Method” in the on-demand course The Retrieve: The Essential Service Dog Task by Veronica Sanchez and Cooperative Paws Service Dog Education.
