It's all takes practice, and no one technique is perfect, or will work 100% of the time. Some things work for some people some of the time, in some situations. You gotta practice, and spar, and get good enough to where hopefully you will find what works best for you, most of the time, in most situations. There are exceptions to everything, and counters to everything, and dealing with those things is where your experience will come into play.
@mattjack3983
Жыл бұрын
@@kieronjdonovanIt's as limited as you think it is. There are counters to everything, and nothing works every time. One guy may be really good at it, and can use it successfully on a consistent basis. That may be his go to move in certain situations, and he may be good enough at it, experienced enough at dealing with the counters to make it work when he needs it to work. It doesn't mean that hes going to use it all the time with everyone over and over again any chance he gets. It just means he finds success with it in certain scenarios, and it mostly works when he needs it to. You dismissing it as "limited" only guarantees that for you, it will be limited, and that's a very limited mindset to have.

there’s definitely something to be said for learning from other arts to become a more well rounded fighter, and something to be said for the “which is better” mentality. at least for me, it’s closer to a “what actually works most of the time” mentality. when it comes to wing chun, like 90% of it is completely irrelevant outside of wing chun, compared to boxing, where 90% of it is extremely useful outside of its niche. often times too, the useful techniques of martial arts that people consider “impractical” or “worse” are present in other practices, without the techniques that are impractical or harmful. this video is a fucking fantastic example of that actually. boxing HAS the useful wing chun techniques already in it!! boxers use frames and pulls, but in conjunction with techniques that are proven to be more effective!! that’s the brilliance of mma, it’s shown through the most rigorous pressure testing exactly what techniques are and aren’t successful. and you have boxers, wrestlers, jui jitsu practitioners, and even karate practitioners at the top level!! but no aikido, kung fu, or wing chun practitioners. i wonder why that is. now you could point out specific techniques that mma fighters do that have equivalent moves in wing chun, but they learned it through a different practice without having to learn the useless shit. idk, maybe arguing about “what is better,” isn’t the right way to frame it, but rather “what will actually help me win a fight,” and let me tell you, almost any other practice will prepare you so so so much more for any fight. especially when comparing it to boxing, one of the most proven martial arts. i mean look at the ufc 292 fight that happened tonight, it was all boxing that won o’malley the fight. angles and timing, both things he almost certainly learned in a boxing or muah thai gym, not at a wing chun fucking dojo lmao

@@nightscarens yea kickboxing seems to be the standard of MMA striking right now because even muy thai in all of its glory, the heaviness on its back foot makes takedown defense slightly harder. As a fan of striking more than grappling, I still have to admit how strong wrestling is in terms of guys like khabib ect. It's hard to say if u should train just enough to defend against it (like Izzy) or if you should be well rounded or specialize in one or the other. But that's the point of a good MMA coach. Give you Muy Tai for the clinch, give you kickboxing for the striking, give u just the essentials of judo or wrestling for takedowns, give u BJJ ect

Wing Chun also good for very tight, in close, slipping and using immovable elbow as a block is perfectly legal in the ring. I have used elbow blocks, to the inside wrist, to great success - punishes, and deters, the guy for wild throws like haymakers or loose hooks and overhands. Even elbow parry uppercuts, with very little departure from rib guard. So much to complement your own style from analysing other styles.

"boxers talk smack about wing Chun... You use it all the time" I suppose the most valid reason for a boxer discrediting wing Chun is the same reason for discrediting a bad boxing gym, that is, the way in which technique and skill is taught is bad and full of faults. These crossover techniques between wing Chun and boxing are simply taught much better in boxing. In the same way a bad boxing coach will teach you how to use a high guard or a jab, but a good boxing coach will teach you these same things just better. The faults in the stance, training equipment and sparring (or lack thereof) simply can't be overlooked. There used to be a trend on mystifying eastern arts, then a trend on hating them and denying their effectiveness completely, now there is a trend of nitpicking the good parts and ignoring the rest. Wing Chun, although it might contain some proper techniques and can't be overlooked completely is still far inferior to most modern martial arts, which are simply ancient martial arts which never died (like boxing and wrestling).
