+Beercamp Slave I don't know about you, but I was around back in 1983 when this aired. Americans back then were, for the most part, not nearly as uptight & "homophobic" as you suggest. Sure, there wld've been a few, as there are a few now. But the difference between now & then is not so big. Little Richard was a big star in the 50s, & he basically did himself up like a woman. The biggest difference between now and then is that a higher percentage of kids openly identify as "bi". The actual numbers of people who have homosexual trysts or more is probably up slightly, but not much. It is just more trumpeted from the rooftops. Human sexuality is essentially the same.

Brilliant mind obviously musically but also socially. It's refreshing for artists to admit their influences and tell the truth about styles being stolen. This was also a nice reminder that the 80s was amazing but filled with moments that lead to diversity and acceptance today with abnormal geniuses showing uptight conservative types that different doesn't mean bad and doesn't mean inferior or dumber. Boy George is absolutely ahead of his time. I saw him in and interview around the same time, he was 23 or 24 and he said that a gay person got on him that he wasn't using his star platform to be a gay advocate and Boy George told him that that's not his job, that he's an advocate against discrimination and hate against people that are different, people that are far or skinny or disabled or mental disabled etc that everybody is an individual and unique and he would never make fun of anyone because they are different that he hates bullies and those who pick on those who cannot fight back, thats who I'm an advocate for and the gay person got upset and walked away. That really impressed me. He also said that when he became famous in the business what upset him the most was the rock stars that he idolized turned out to be fake, that it was just a show they put on. He said one needs to be true to ones self and he's absolutely correct.

I think the gay community should take note of boy George in 83 did you notice his confidence and the way he held himself when the people in the crowd were laughing and lettermen asking very direct questions. Nowadays someone would be so offended and run off and the media would go burn down the show. But boy George knew his self worth and his talent his dreams in his music and the way he’d always wanted to present himself. True respect for him being himself everyone gay straight brown black or white should take note of that.

Those were the golden days of the 80s. While guarded, Boy George handled this Letterman interview like a pro. His intelligence and ability to articulate his purpose was far beyond his years for the time. He won Letterman over in little more than 11 minutes, a sign of true talent. You're definitely gay, he looks like a female. Girls this generation are afraid of men who look like men lmfao...

Well spoken for a 22 year old. Articulates his thoughts well. Try and find a 22 year old pop star these days and try conversing with them and you can literally see smoke come out of their ears as they strain to compose a thought.

Dude, a straight man won't capitalize beautiful with exclamation points and the fact that you have to say you're straight tells me that you're anything but straight. It's okay to come out. You know you want to.

How totally charming, relaxed & natural, Boy George is! I was a teenager in the '80's. Culture Club, alongside Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna & Cindy Lauper, were massive. The music of this era was not only characterised by innovative & memorable production techniques but the personalities & identities of the stars themselves. A truly Golden Era, which continues to leave its mark on the music of today.

Um, Europe, Australia and Japan had plenty of "socially backwards" people back then. Quit being an ignorant putz and generalizing an entire country like that.
