My son had to wrestle a girl in middle school. It was horrific. He was aggressive and while at first not pushing the pace too fast, made a move to gain her back and riding her. Unfortunately she was severely injured, a collarbone break. The scream in that gym was something I'll never forget. Her parents came out on the mat and was upset and yelling about my son. A young lady should never be on a mat with a young man. Period. The strength mismatch is obvious and great. Girls wrestling girls more power to ya. Thankfully he only wrestled one girl in high school. Quick and also without injury to the girl. Thankful for that.

I was on my junior high school wrestling team back in the late 70s. A girl came out for the team. Keep in mind this was way before this kind of stuff was commonplace. She wrestled my weight class. I can't even remember the weight class, 110, something like that, so I had to wrestle her every practice. Her technique wasn't bad, and I was no state champion, but I could easily defeat her because it was easy to overpower her. The funny thing was we all got used to her, and over time we didn't think much about the fact that she was a girl. The interesting part was we didn't really have anybody competitive for the weight class above us so she would routinely represent the team at matches at that weight class. She was the only girl so she would weigh in in the girls locker room alone. She would join us after she weighed in. When a we traveled for away matches that's when things got real interesting. She was a spectical. She beat a couple dudes along the way too. We would go nuts, but the other team would be like, "Holy crap, what just happened?" You can get away with combined competition at an early age, but as boys and girls age, the physical differences become more pronounced.

Wrestling works in weight classes and at lower levels girls can somewhat keep up but have a slight disadvantage. At middle and high school level I've seen plenty of female wrestling submit boys and one of my training partners was a girl one weight class above me (I was 160s and she was 170s) and she would do okay when she wrestled boys of her weight class however her record was definitely not the best (something like 4-7). However at higher level competition you never seen co-ed wrestling because the more skilled the wrestlers, are the more ways they know how to take advantage of differences in strength and physic. Even the slightest difference in muscle mass is game changing in collegic and Olympic wrestling, let alone the difference between men and women.

It can be tough for the young boys cause girls develop quicker than boys. I've seen a couple boys get beat by girls and its pretty sad. Typically those boys who have been taught since they were toddlers to not be rough with girls are naturally timid when stepping on the mat with one. Majority of these girls are wrestling bc their aren’t enough female wrestlers to make a bracket for that specific weight class, women just want to enjoy the sport too. Where I’m from it’s not separated bc at every competition there’s a total of maybe 3 other girls aside from me and only one or two in my weight class. If the girl worked hard enough to beat someone who’s naturally more advantaged, why should she have to not participate bc it affects your “masculinity”. You lost fair and square, if you went east on her, or acted “awkward” get over it and beat her next time. I assure you it doesn’t feel good for the girl either when people make comments on being less of a man bc you lost to a girl, so why suggest removing women from men’s division ?

@Bobby Brissette that's fine brother...teach your children how to defend themselves..but when you put your daughter in a sport for boys to potentially hurt her or feel her up it's unnecessary.if you have a son that wrestles, in this day and age with all these femenist and "me too movement" our son's really have to be careful where they place their hands ...things can go far left when or if a parent or lil girl gets angry from a loss... accusations of all sorts can be a issue I had a discussion with a friend that was a highschool wrestler...he told me that if the day ever comes, where boys are taught to see girls in the same way they see others boys on the mat( no holds barred)...those girls will be in a world of trouble

Fun fact: since 6th grade, me and my boys used to talk shit about how wrestling was “really gay” cuz it was boys on boys and shit, and we always clowned them. But come 7th grade, we were forced to participate in Olympic Games Day at my school, and we were all obligated to participate in every sport. So when i went to the gym to start the wrestling event for my class, i was taught some techniques by my later to be Coach Rodney Smith, (a former bronze Olympian from Barcelona) and luckily i was partnered with a girl. I learned the half nelson and bulldog and stuff, and then we had to wrestle eachother kneeling down, and i won; and it was then that i said “Hey, this is actually pretty cool” i felt like an actual gladiator when i beat someone wrestling, even if it wasnt anywhere close to the real thing, and so later i signed up. It would take me 2 skirmishes to finally get my first official win, but by that point i was already hooked😌

I wrestled for 6 years in school and was always in the lighter weight classes and so had to wrestle a handful of girls. It was always a tough situation. Sort of a lose-lose. If you lost, your were done in terms of how the other boys would react! If you didn't win commandingly, you might also face ridicule. In retrospect, this was unfair to the girls. Every girl I wrestled seemed to give it their all. There is no way a girl the same weight as a boy can be as strong. It's so unlikely and rare. So, these girls, despite having significantly less muscle, were out there competing and giving it their all and relying on other possible advantages like speed, agility, technique, and smarts. I really give my praise to these girls. I'll bet many of them lose matches in the double digits and yet continue to compete with the boys. That shows a lot of grit and character. I remember one Jr. Varsity tournament where I was put into the consolation bracket after the first round. While I never wrestled her, the winner of the whole bracket was a girl! She was the daughter of the wrestling coach and was a total animal. Strong, fast, good technique, great endurance, SUPER cute (she was even a cheerleader in the off-season!). I was so glad I never had to directly wrestle her where I'd certainly lose. Now as a father with a daughter who wrestles, I'm happy every time she competes and leaves it all on the mat even if she loses. It would be hard to lose over and over again to others who are typically quite a bit stronger. I really take my hat off and salute these female competitors who continue to give it their all in matches against boys! And even more kudos to those particularly good female wrestlers who beat many male competitors. Wrestling is such a great sport and no one knows how hard it is until they've spent 6 minutes on that mat!
@JoshuaDanielsJD
9 ай бұрын
And for the record, this montage of videos is exactly my experience watching *most* male-female matches throughout high school in even a strong wrestling state like KS. Most female wrestlers just get slaughtered in the first round. More reason to give accolades to them for their continued dedication to get back up and try again. I can't imagine how it would feel to work so hard in practice through an entire season and lose probably almost every match every season and yet keep on doing it. That's some grit! I'm glad female wrestling is catching on and some states and schools now have all-female teams and all-female meets and tournaments. It is great to see the top females compete against each other on a more equal footing (in terms of raw strength).

Boy-girl competition is unfair for boys... even it is risky at that age. İn case of a bad lost by pin in front of his family, audience including May be the girl for whom he feels something; it May cause a real damage in his soul. To lose against a girl in any other sport would not be so bad; even it fight sports based on hits or impact the hits are counted and a girl having equal chance to make a punch would not humiliate the boy by defeating him. But wrestling is based on control of the opponent's body.

I have mixed opinions on all of this. I wrestled in middle school and high school but never faced a girl. For most teenage boys it would be VERY awkward. I will say that in some controlled environment like a self defense class this might be smart. No doubt the girls who wrestle boys can gain a huge advantage in terms of self defense especially when it comes to finding out what men are actually capable of. The life skills you learn from wrestling are also invaluable and the self confidence and humility gained through one on one combat sports are some of the best things a young man can gain. I assume this is true for women also. Sisters and wives of wrestlers also tend to be pretty tough lol! My sisters are all very strong women and my wife is dangerous :)

because there were no separate boys/girls divisions in the folk style till recently. Girls wrestle boys starting from Tots and up at the club level folk style. We had situations when we had 2-5 girls in different weight brackets against 400+ boys in the same tournament. If there are enough girls in the same weight bracket to pair them up, they will, otherwise, they'd wrestle boys. If girls were "quietly waiting in the corner" for a separate division just to happen out of the blue, they'd be waiting till the cows come home. The only reason the folk style scene starts having girls-only teams/events is that there are enough girls now wrestling so they have enough to separate it. The last tournament we went to in WI, they had so many girls participating so they were able to have two girls-only mats set up. And just FYI, there are girls that will give boys a run for their money. Not 1:1 but often enough that it makes it worth mentioning. To wrap it up, no one seems to have any issues with girls wrestling boys in Judo or BJJ ... what seems to be the issue here?

One of the things they practiced was being down on the ground, a person on top, and they had to escape. She gets matched up with this man in her class, and she has to start flat on her belly with him on top of her. They're wrestling and twisting, really going at it. She said she did OK, that while she was not able to escape she was able to get her arms free or something like that. Funny thing was, the instructor blows the whistle after a couple minutes and they both stand back up, and he's got a huge hardon poking out of the front of his little FBI gym shorts. Afterwards all the women in the class were like, "I'm never hooking up with that guy!"
