The Bracken's Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia is a true super cold hardy cultivar of Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora). Regular Southern Magnolia is hardy in USDA Zones 6-10. Bracken's Brown Beauty has been selected for its vibrant cinnamon Brown undersides while retaining the deep Emerald glossy upsides, and being more cold hardy than the species. This cultivar grows a whole zone North than the species in USDA Zones 5-10. Flowers are the same with all Southern Magnolia cultivars large white flowers that are deeply fragrant. Citrusy scent. They are broadleaf evergreens, even in the North however they can burn in subzero temperatures below -5°F/-20.5°C. While this may seem like the tree is dying, it certainly is fine and the stems have their buds set for Spring and will quickly fill in as if no damage occurred at all. The stems are hardy down to -20°F/-28.9°C. There is at least one other cultivar I am aware of that is hardy into zone 5 and that is 'Edith Bogue'. Leaves are slightly larger than Brackens and do not have the brown undersides. 🌳
