My dad disappeared from his care home in 2015. He had dementia and was not in the proper type of facility to care for his rapidly progressing memory issues. Dad had very violent dementia/Alzheimer's with sun downers, the whole aweful enchilada. He got on a bus in Oakland CA right in front of his care home. An APB went out and a bus driver saw him pacing in an agitated state at Ashby BART. He got about 4 miles. Oakland PD did an awesome job locating him fast and took him to San Leandro Hospital because dad said he lived in San Leandro, the city just south of Oakland, he had no idea he now lived in Oakland. We were lucky. He was missing about 12 hours. The Alzheimer's Years were horrible. I found a locked-down memory care facility fast. Im interested to know why such an ill person would be taken on vacation?

Neither is a substitute for frequent in-person checks. A trick I know from working in dementia care all my life ( it's not really a trick....and I like to think that the tracker manufacturers should have this in their instructions): rather than have something that's worn like a piece of jewelry that can be removed, the tracker is pinned on the back between the shoulder blades where the individual is unlikely to be able to see it and think they want to remove it.

Really hoping he's found soon! For people who don't know what to look out for, it can be very hard to spot if someone suffers from dementia or something similar, so, apart from not having money on him, the taxi driver may not have noticed anything off - especially if there's a language barrier to an extent. I don't know what it's like in the US and elsewhere, but local to me, there's been campaigns to make the general public more aware of how to interact with people with dementia. It can be tricky, but it's important, since people live at home for much longer than they used to. When it comes to GPS tags; there's various kinds besides those you mentioned initially, but none of them are entirely foolproof. Recently, I learned about Neil Gaiman (the author) losing his dog for a while. He did have a GPS tracker on the dog, with a subscription claiming he'd be able to track the dog anywhere, but that was, unfortunately, not the case (the dog came back!). When doing a long-distance cycling journey, my dad brings a very basic GPS device, which pings to actual satellites every so often, and it can still throw up weird data.

Just answering a question from the start, no, it is not a normal thing in Mexico for tourists to pay cab fares with items like watches! It's very normal for them to be unused to the currency, but most people on vacation in Mexico will be told to carry cash for incidental expenses like cab rides, since everything down there isn't wired for credit or debit cards like in the States, Canada or most of Europe. There tend to be a lot of opportunistic and downright criminal types who hang around ports where cruise ships dock and resort cities, and I really don't like or trust those places. When I'm in Mexico I prefer to stick around the coastal area where my sister and her family live, where everyone knows everyone else, and that predatory environment doesn't exist.

You can't just board any cruise ship. All passengers are given a passenger ID card which allows them off and back on the ship. You have to swipe it to get on and off. This is how they know everyone has boarded before leaving a port, and how they prevent random people from boarding. He would not have been permitted to board another ship. If someone had brought him to a ship they would have hopefully called authorities.

A scenario not mentioned is he chose this. If his mind is still well enough to recognize how rapidly he was declining then he may believe caring for him is soon going to become too great of a burden on the people he loves. Could he have planned to get separated on the last stop on their trip? Why did the taxi driver take him to a remote beach instead of the tourist area? Did Brad ask to go that far outside of town so he couldn't be found? Since he enjoyed surfing, he may have wanted to sit and watch the waves until the sun set then went into the water for a "swim" knowing he would not return.

They said his condition had progressed so far that communication was difficult. Was he even able to ask the taxi driver anything, let alone plan something like this? They need to ask that taxi driver more questions about what exactly was said and how it was determined where he wanted to go.

Just thought I would add John, there is a Garmin watch that is solar powered. It's much higher priced than others I've seen (over $1000) but that would eliminate even the charging issue. I can't add links in comments but for those that are interested it's the Garmin Quatix 7x - Solar Edition.

How do they know he didn't board the ship and wasn't identified as missing at the time? Did they search the ship? Of course not!!!

Cruise ships have pretty robust security recording every passenger getting off then on again at ports. Usually via a cruise card, passport or both. Most would record this electronically & I'd expect a brand new ship has the most up to date security measures. If he got back on the ship they would almost certainly have a record of it. Otherwise, any random person could walk on...

I was thinking the same thing, or he boarded another ship. But if he did board the ship they arrived in, he does have the ID hanging around his neck.

@@littleflippitalthough it doesn't happen often, people have disappeared from cruise ships and the ship claims no video of what may have happened. Not every crew member is responsible and on the alert, in any case.

@@SILSAL67yes people disappear from cruise ships reasonably frequently, but the lack of evidence about what happened to them on the ship does not mean there is no record that they were on the ship at the time. The converse is more likely to be true, the cruise line accepts the person disappeared from the ship in the absence of evidence as to how because there is a record that they were on the ship at the time & they now can't be located. Hence, if this missing gentleman boarded the ship after wandering away from his wife, the ship would have a record of that in all likelihood.

One word: Airtag (Apple, or similar). If you are on vacation with a family member who has dementia or is otherwise develpmentally disabled, the chances he/she will wander off and get lost is always going to be rather high... The easy solution is to make sure that person is tagged electronically, so if he is separated from the family, it's a small matter to look up his location on your phone. And make sure the tag is not a piece of jewelry (a necklace, pendant, bracelet, etc) which would quickly be stolen in a robbery. Best to have the tag clipped to their underwear, so that it's not likely to be removed - or certainly not within a few minutes of the person disappearing!

I’ve never been on a cruise ship. Is it possible for someone to return to the wrong ship? Can someone simply walk right on without ID or ticket ?
@AC949

It would be very difficult to board the wrong cruise ship. Or even the right one. You scan your wrist band, it matches your picture to security. You go through security & they will ask for ID if something doesn’t match. It would have shown if he entered the ship. If you are lost at all, a crew member will assist you. Came back on to see if he was ever found.

Here's me not knowing a lot about technology even though John explained it very well. If the wife had an alert on her phone for up to 30ft, I believe John said, how did the alert not go off? Or was it just a tracker that wouldn't sound any kind of alert? You could pretty much judge the timing of a bathroom stop. Number one about 2-3 minutes and number two about.....who knows, depending on the person, I guess.

They walked off the ship and didn't take a van to get to the bathrooms. It seems like that was an erroneous sighting. A lot of the local people said the white American tourists look similar to each other & there are hundreds of them when a cruise ship docks.

Tile is not the next most popular device and it is not a Samsung product. The galaxy smart tag 2 is and it works like the airtag but has longer range, longer battery life and there are more Samsung devices outside the US than there are iphones. We need to contact a cellphone provider that will loan a couple of portable cellphone towers to place in that area. Then we need to get a volunteer force with both Iphones and Samsungs and space out every 50 ft and comb the whole north side of the island. That area does have crocodiles and other predatory animals but we should be able to find the GPS device. I wish I knew who to contact to help spearhead this operation. My company would be more than willing to provide our services at no charge and help gather volunteers and fundraise.

For someone that knows Cozumel is very hard to believe what Mimi is saying how he just disappeared, no one vanishes in Cozumel, specially someone that doesn’t blend with the residents and doesn’t speak Spanish, so many inconsistencies, he didn’t get lost in the giant ship but as soon as he got out he did and in Cozumel? Nah! I do not want to be insensitive but after seeing the videos of him in Cozumel walking so confident, it is hard to believe what they want is to believe.

Some really nasty and uncaring posts on this. How mean and unkind are the victim blaming posts. This family are doing everything they can to find Brad. Fortunately there are many good people helping them. If family are reading the posts on here, please know that the horrible blaming posts are just that - the thoughts of only a few people. The largest majority of us are so very very sad for you all, and hope you get answers soon.
