SOLO "Bless This House"
(words by Helen Taylor; music by May H. Brahe, 1927)
Grace Mott, soprano; Dale Morehouse, piano
“Bless This House” was written in 1927 by friends Helen Taylor and May Brahe. Brahe was a very successful Australian composer who had more than 290 of her 500 songs published. This made her the only female Australian composer to earn international recognition in the first half of the 20th century.
This sacred song has had good reason for its world-wide popularity: the sentiment is direct and its melody is strong. It is a true inspiration to help Christians be thankful for their blessings, encouraging hope, gratitude, and faith. Artists such as Perry Como, Doris Day, Vera Lynn, Mahalia Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Leontyne Price, and Bryn Terfel have all recorded it.
Bless this house, O Lord we pray,
Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout,
Keeping want and trouble out;
Bless the roof and chimneys tall,
Let thy peace lie overall;
Bless this door, that it may prove
Ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright,
Letting in God's heavenly light;
Bless the hearth, ablazing there,
With smoke ascending like a prayer,
Bless the people here within;
Keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be
Fit, O Lord, to dwell with thee,
Bless us all that one day we
May dwell, O Lord! with Thee!
