These variations, more homogenous, more moving than the variations on a theme by Handel, have inexplicably eclipsed the latter. These variations, written on a theme of great nobility, during the coda reach an intensity of expression and a level of thought worthy of the greatest sheets of music. Theme -Joachim wrote to Brahms: « Your theme is the deepest inspiration. » Variation I: Sinuous, starting off lazily in low pitch, the piece seems to awaken slowly like a snake coming out of hibernation. Variation Il: Natural, fresh, the melody dashes forward with delight. Variation Ill: Remaining "dolce" the third variation which syncopates keeps the same freshness. Variation IV: Binary in its punctuation, compound in its rhythm, and phrased by 4 measures, then 5, this variation rich as regards composition embellishes the work and leads us forward in this enchanted garden... Variation V: ...where pours forth "tenderly" a "molto espressivo" duo, which becomes... Variation VI: ...more effervescent. Variation VIl: We return "dolce" to a calmer mood, but very fragrant with its voluptuous intervals and interlaced in two hands. Variation VIll: In contrast to the colour, here we have a rhythmic variation, in minor, giving an epic breath of fresh air... Variation IX: ...reaching its climax -fortissimo - with a roll of kettle drums ! Variation X: This variation in minor agitato » is like a dark and oppressive corridor from which we are eager to escape. It ends on a return to the theme in major... VariationXI: ...which sails calmly on a hunting song. Combining the serenity of opus 109 and the altitude of opus 111, this page matches any Beethoven masterpiece. Moreover, in a twilight setting, the coda inspire, not to be underestimated, the final act of Elektra (a Richard Strauss opera) where a throbbing call and the repetition of two notes - "O-reste" - precedes the deeply moving reunion of a brother and sister, orphaned by their murdered parents. 10 variations on a theme by Schumann Opus 23 for 4 hands. It is on the few notes written by Schumann (who said that they had been dictated to him by Mendelssohn in a dream) while in asylum that Brahms would compose this moving cycle in the memory of his friend Robert. Theme: slow and introspective. 1st variation : expressive scrolls softly announced. 2nd variation : more sombre, dense but still sotto voce. Yt variation : freer, seeking to soar. 4th variation : in minor, tragic repercussions, bare writing. 5th variation : in B major, both carefree and melancholic, a reminder of happier days? 6th variation : in E flat (Allegro non troppo), martial but light, a fife march. 7th variation : shadows pass... moving. 8th variation : in G minor, more restless, it leads admirably 9th variation : in C minor, marking the dramatic summit of the piece. The final and 10th variation is a funeral march on a rhythm at the end of the theme by Schumann: a final adieu to a departed friend. Eric HEIDSIECK. Variations Op. 21 No. 1 00:00 and Op.23 (on a theme by Schumann) 15:21 little known and overshadowed by those of Handel and Haydn. They are however sublime and already contain all of Brahms. With a depth combining serenity and melancholy, as sensitive as imperial and powerful, we fell under the spell in a total way. Of a real difficulty of execution for the pianist, Eric and Tania Heidsieck maintain once again a very high standard of interpretation. Virtuosity and expression are at the service of a perfectly assimilated and translated work. Johannes Brahms PLAYLIST (reference recordings): kzitem.info/news/bejne/yYig0JZnfnSHfn4

With these pieces Brahms reminds me of home, of the magic world of childhood. And I still think that all is magical -- mankind just lost it's senses. A beautiful interpretation... magical.
