What phenomenal drive, unsentimental raw emotion and vision. Miraculously enlightening, Carlos Kleiber RIP

Absolutely superb and scintillating, as usual with Kleiber selected if small repertoire.

WHY couldn't you upload it? Legal considerations? It is a brilliant gem, one which adds significantly to our corpus of memorable Carlos performances.

Thanks for posting. This is far more exciting than the VPO performance from 1991 available as a Unitel DVD.

Tom, I agree with your second sentence 100%. This is an incomparably more lithe, sinewy, non-lush, and intense Brahms. I loved every second of it. No other conductor could have produced this brilliant, breathtaking interpretation; not Karajan, Abbado, Bernstein, Furtwangler, Toscanini, or Haitink.

@@Berto-bo7mr Sorry for sticking my nose in, but I noticed you didn't mention Bruno Walter in your list. His interpretation with the CSO in 1960 is for me the gold standard. Possibly because he was blessed with some of the best sound engineering that I know to exist. The 50's and early 60's with Szell and Walter were truly astonishing in the sound department. Kleiber's interpretation, like almost everything he touched, feels like a perfect lap in a brand new Aston Martin. I love him for that. But there are other things.

@@Berto-bo7mr Listen to the Karajan Salzburg cycle live in 1983. That is incredible. I think it beats this (not that it's a competition!!)

Je dirais même plus, selon le New-York Times d'il y a une dizaine d'années, le plus grand chef d'orchestre de tous les temps, Carlos Kleiber, je pense qu'il on raison...
