I was taught to knit when I was 2 - I’m 70 now, so have done a LOT of knitting of all sorts over the years and have used both instructions as well as charts in that time. To be frank, following charts has always meant that I am constantly trying to follow the “dots and dashes” to the extent I make way more errors than with instructions (which I can memorise). That causes me a lot of wasted time unpicking, a lot of bad language and often having to resort to a very stiff drink to recover from the experience. So, unless it is an incredibly desirable article I want to knit, if it is a chart, I’m not bothering. At 70, time is too short for unpicking. But for those who like charts - great, enjoy!

Lace charts!!! I have knitted Victorian, Estonian and Shetland lace items from charts for years, then I discovered Japanese lace knitting charts in 2017. When I saw you pull out a chart from the Japanese knitting stitch bible, i thought for an instant that you were about to jump off the chart cliff and scare everyone away! They are challenging… very challenging. However, all Japanese charts use standardized symbols, eliminating guess work 😂

after getting myself through my first few months of high anxiety basic knitting (lol), i became consistently drawn to lace patterns that had regular charts. After a couple years, i began cruising around on pinterest and instantly fell in love when i saw my first flow map. Yes, there was a bit of trial-and-error So I just told my brain that if I wasn't knitting in the round, I would work every back row as the mirror image of what I was looking at on the map. Later in my journey with flow maps, it finally dawned on me that for each row i was about to start, i needed to know how many stitches i was about to pick up, and how many stitches I was creating. I'm not sure of all the reasons why I'm most comfortable with the flow maps, but i sure do like those visuals since they're not constrained by a chart. I absolutely love how you broke down the details with each of your charts. You always manage to put just the right details together for it to be clear. I really enjoy your videos.

I hate right side (odd)/wrong side (even) charts. The last one I used I changed the purl side knit and purl symbols on the wrong (even) side. I don't like the dot being both knit AND purl. I recently knitted socks that had so many tiny cables going in both directions (hold in front, hold behind) that it made me crazy. Thank you for doing this! I knit a lot of lace shawls, so you can understand my confusion with charts. Boxes shaded out, a bunch of boxes at each edge that are no stitches....it makes me cross-eyed. I did do a little bit of colourwork from a chart when I knit Caitlin Hunter's Teroldego shawl and I managed that OK. I'm knitting a Gansey sweater for my husband and it's got some little cables and that part it charted, but it's only about 8-10 rows that are repeated over and over, so I think I can do that easily enough. I'm saving this video and when I'm feeling ambitious enough to try a lace pattern, I can do a refresher. Would it be a smart idea to choose a pattern that has both charts and a written pattern, so I can refer back and forth if I need clarity or would be best to just jump in with both feet and go chart only? I'm pretty good with reading my knitting. Most of the time. 😉

Having both written instructions and a chart is a great asset for beginners! if there's a spot in the chart that's confusing, you can refer to the written instructions for that row and it should clarify it for you 😊

I never understood the preference for written patterns. I rejoice every time I find a charted pattern and, consequently sigh in despair when it’s -again- a written pattern. BTW - charts are international! I use patterns in four languages, the corresponding charts would be more or less the same no matter which language.

Could you consider doing a video tutorial for how to convert a normal colorwork chart to a mosaic chart, both in the round and flat? I thought it'd be easy, but you showed every chart row twice in the round, and I got thrown off, hah! I thought it'd be simply following the chart, but with mosaic stitches row for row, and now I think it's more complex than that. Thanks so much. These tutorial videos are awesome.

On the wrong side (the "rest" rows) you would be working the stitches as you see them facing you on that side, i.e. knitting the stitches that look like knits and purling the stitches that look like purls. The way I phrased it may have confused the matter 😋

You're not wrong - all charts are telling you what to do. It's just that sometimes the stitch type and count in the chart doesn't match with what's already on the needle and can throw people off and think they've done something wrong. Does that make sense? 😊
