I remember being 13 and being absolutely obsessed with this movie and the idea of an afterlife. I even tried to rig up my headphones into my VCR just so I could try and record my experiences and dreams. Hilariously silly in afterthought! But such a big inspiration for me. This film has been crapped upon by so many, but I'll always be a fan. :)

I feel the same way. The movie actually attempted to visually explore what death is as recorded through this amazing fictional device and doing so hypothesizes that life is a group of events in time represented by bubbles or spheres containing these moments. Also at the time of death freed to travel unhindered towards some visually unexplained destination. I admire Mr. Trumbull's bravery in imagery to try visually illustrate this. Other films like Hereafter (2010) shy away from trying. I am like you a huge fan of the film and of Mr. Trumbull.

How sad. But its still going on as a accidental drowning.

This ended up being the second and last theatrical film the late Douglas Trumbull ever directed. He was so disgusted with the way MGM handled "Brainstorm" after Natalie died that he swore off theatrical films altogether. First they refused to let him film all the "helmet" sequences in Showscan (the original HFR), then after she died, MGM tried to scuttle the film and collect the insurance money.

@@evertonporter7887 In MGM's defense, they had just bought another studio which had done exactly that, with disastrous results: United Artists. Turns out that MGM was in shaky financial shape before that, so they were exceedingly cautious, and given what happened to MGM/UA after that, they weren't wrong. Still, they should have trusted Trumbull.

Brainstorm describes the idea for the time mad to be able to record thoughts and feelings and to feed them back into the brain directly. Of course, the entertainment industry and the military are very interested... On the side, one can praise Chris Walken, the enchanting Natalie Wood just before her death, the great Soundtack of James Horner, who has always liked to steal later at the same time, and the great effects, especially the journey beyond, reminds strongly of the Jupiter flight from 2001 (director Doug Trumbull had made the effects at 2001. Funny from today's point of view also the hacker attack on the company. In the end, the film, especially in response to the big question of life after death or whatever happens, dares too little. More interesting than the religious discourse would be to illuminate the impact of technology on society (as indicated by the "intersected" continuous orgasm), and the effects of possible dependence.

Ironic thing is that Natalie Wood (seen here in this scene) DIED while making this movie. . . and the movie shows an afterlife experience during which she is trying to save someone from dying. Most of the movie was finished before she died so it was released, but without some scenes which would have made the movie more complete. I personally feel that IF there are movies which should be re-made, this should be one of them because it was never finished in proper manner and now they have technology to capture the original vision for the movie which was not possible to do in a cost effective manner back in the 80s.

This has to be my most favorite part of the film - as it is the most beautiful! (Whoever put this sequence together obviously had some experience/encounter with what's known as a "Near Death Experience" - or "NDE"!).... Btw, visions of the afterlife are *NOT* hallucinations - nor are they a result of dying brain cells. Isochronic medial synaptic recall, parsed as mnemonic expression through the hippocampus and pineal gland expression circuits, evoking Warneke's area, Broca's area, and the neocortextual pre-frontal lobe mechanisms for memory engram recall, synthesis, and proto-correlation. At this state, Michael is not dying, but is intricately connected to Lillian's crossing, so much so that his own aural signature becomes enflowed into Lillian's superconcious state, even after the tape has run out. I believe that what Michael is seeing is a combination of both Lillian's subjective synaptic signature, expressed as visual and auditory hallucinographic sensory output, and Michael's still intact ID/EGO reverberating within the Shakrik flow of Lillian's energy SIGNATURE, not the actual "soul"", as that has already resolved into another termporal location. Michael is able to hear Karen's protestations because his limbic and auditory centers are still active and processing new stimuli.

At a certain point, referring to my last comment, quantum state field resolution and statis does occur, for any coherent energy pattern, so that the resulting higgs field "resolves" into status temporarae, or a state of stillness that defies temporal measurement, as the string emmission spectrum is so infinitesimally slow that it rivals 0 Kelvin in reference to quantum motion.

I think the term "near death experience" says it all: Your really not "dead". I dont think God (or whatever big guy/gal in charge you believe in) would let us see the other side unless we were really dead. I equate NDEs to dreaming, really cool but meaningless in reality. People hear you see a bright light so by God they see a bright light, and they see people who have "passed on" coming to meet them. When all it is is a brain talking to itself.
