Lol, glad it worked out for you! Same thing happened to my 2006 Honda Odyssey last month. Battery kepted on dying and we couldn’t figure out what was draining the battery. We made sure everything was turn off when we exited the car. We had check for everything and was replacing the battery weekly as whatever malfunction was killing our battery. Finally noticed the back brake lights were staying on one night, went to check the plug and noticed it was cracked but not fully fallen off. Once we replaced the plug with a penny, we never had problems with our battery again.

FYI I used flat magnets from old refrigerator magnets cause I could not get my fingers under to use bolts or to glue coins. They slide into to place and will not come loose

Hey guys, I have an Asian wife too, and she helped me fix it with her smaller frame and great hands, thanks for your help, we used a piece of tin plate to cover the two holes left by the broken 'buttons,' taped it in place and now working well.

I just want to say THANK YOU! to all that had helpful advice on what to do. I asked at Autozone and was told that I needed a brake switch, which sounded like what I needed, but, as we all know, that is not always what it is. :) So I bought the switch thinking that I could do that in a short time, according to the guys at Autozone anyway. I have a 2001 Xterra 2-wheel drive and it turns out that the area that you need to see is blocked by a large plate, one that helps hold the steering column in place, I think. So, I went to my computer and looked it up on KZitem and here I am telling my story, hopefully it'll help someone. BOTH of my grommets were gone, one for the brake light, the other for the cruise control, which, the last time I tried it, didn't work. What I ended up doing was hot gluing a penny to each 'hole' where the grommet should go, I used HIGH TEMPERATURE GLUE for it, since a hot car can possibly heat up 'normal' hot glue. It was a mess, but I did it in around two minutes, both the brake one and the cruise. After I post this I am ordering the part on Amazon... www.amazon.com/dp/B00TNL826G/?coliid=I346BZJFIFJUMP&colid=1C7RR8RZTU9V7&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it_im The Part # is: 46512-H0101 Nissan 46512-H0101 OEM Rubber Stopper for Brake Light In a few videos I have read that you can remove the dash panel and the panel with the fuses too, so you can 'see' what you are doing. In a Xterra you don't have to do that at all, if you start the vehicle and push on the brakes it makes the brakes depressed even more, allowing you to see AND feel it. This is NO PROBLEM at all, I promise, and I suck at fixing things. :) Before you do anything, be sure to try this I can say that on a Xterra it will work, on other Nissan vehicles, I can't say, but from the diagrams that I saw online, it appears that it would still work. Again, thanks to ALL of the good people that were helpful in making this an actual two minute job, as opposed to my 'normal' two minute jobs that actually take me a few hours of cussing and sweating. :)

Thank you so much guys. You saved me a boatload of time! That was exactly what was wrong with mine. I was sitting in the parking lot of the hardware store scratching my head after I replaced the switch and nothing happened. I took the new switch out put my old one back in returned the one I just bought and drove away with a big smile on my face thanks to you guys! Cheers from California!

Thank you, The penny did work to restore contact for the switch in my Frontier 2003 Crew Cab SE. There is a plastic insert that was loose and had broken from a thin connector located on the brake pedal assembly. The penny provided the surface need to close the contact. Thanks again.

Thank you so much! My battery died and I couldn't figure out why, until it happened again at night, and I found my brake lights faintly on. I had trouble getting under there at first since the brake pedal wouldn't move enough with the engine turned off and my arms didn't bend in enough places. Plus I have a clutch which made it even more cramped! The next day I called AAA for a jump, and I ended up putting a neodymium magnet over the hole with the engine running. It was a lot easier than trying to glue a penny in the right spot.

Go to Autozone. Get a clip that is used to hold plastic trim like fender liners and underhood plastic. Find one that will fit the two holes on the brake pedal. Then just pop them into the holes! Bueno! Done in two minutes. And here is the secret to getting better access to the pedal. Disconnect the pin that holds it to the brake booster. That gives you more room.. but also start the car and still push down on the pedal. You just gave yourself about an extra inch and a half more room. I did mine in two minutes. And I did not have to readjust anything cause the plastic fender rivits are practically the same height as the original bumpers. ;)

I will suggest don’t be cheap use a dime because a penny will rust (patina) much faster than a dime and the glue is not going to prevent a penny from rusting and the glue might come off.

We will have to agree to disagree. The penny was glued to the brake pedal and if the switch needs to be replaced, it can still be replaced. For me personally, $13 is way too much for a small piece of rubber.
