@@Infamoustwin213 Many areas of NYC have very low water pressure in the water mains. The yellow suction line, while very flexible and easy to hook up can actually get sucked closed while supplying hand lines and even worse when supplying a tower ladder. The engines pump actually pulls into a vacuum in these conditions. The hard black suctions will not collapse. Also they can be used on rare occasions to draft from a body of water, like off a pier.

why are the engine numbers and the ladder numbers different? I've always wondered about that. please forgive my ignorance on this. But I wasn't raised in a firemen's house or a family of them. I'm from a very small rural town with a very small firehouse with volunteers. With one firetruck and one water truck. And that's it. If help is ever needed then the next town over (4 miles) sends their volunteers. And if even MORE help is needed then the next big town with permanent firemen and such, is only 9 miles away. And this is why I don't know how the numbers work.
@mrengine9
7 ай бұрын
In large cities like NYC, Usually trucks aren't housed together as the same number as they've gotten moved around, disbanded, changed out and such. So the numbers (except for 2 stations. Station 52 and I believe 32) do not match up. So an engine can be placed in service on one date and a new ladder company can be added on a different date and at some point in time, the heads of the FDNY wish to put those trucks together in one station. Sometimes it's just succession and since there are more engine companies than ladder companies, the Engine numbers end up being higher than the Ladder numbers. Its a bit wacky.

@Bulvan123
Ай бұрын
Studies show blue is better in certain conditions (I think fog) so a lot of places added them. NY requires only red (or red/white) facing forward on all emergency vehicles. There's no consensus in America. I live in Maryland. Fire & EMS can not use blue at all even on the back. While police must use some blue (blue/white, blue/red) on their vehicles.
@markfryer9880

In most of Australia 🇦🇺 all emergency services vehicles use red and blue lights but with different layouts so you can sort of tell Police from Fire Rescue from Ambulance Victoria. Road rules now state that when any emergency vehicle has its flashing lights on then passing traffic must slow down to 40 kmh. Mark from Melbourne Australia
