It is different, it really can't be compared because it's different in many ways (including instruments vs acapella) and most of us grew up with hearing it sang by Johnny, but I think they did a respectful refreshed version of it in their acapella way and I loved Home Free's spin on it.

HF actually did a bluesy/jazzy version of this song while mimicking the train whistle sound with their woo hoo woo sound throughout. Johnny was more a baritone singer which made sense for me that Chance sang it I believe in the same key. The difference is HF slowed down the beat compared to Johnny's original to give it that bluesy feel. It is kind like how they did a similar change with John Denver's Take Me Home Country Roads, where they slowed it down and made it more bluesy too. After hearing it a few times, I think this will be one of HF's most watched videos going forward.

Tim's smirk when he hit that low note still has me laughing my butt off. I love the way they modernized this old beater of Johnny's. To me they brought it into today without taking anything away from Johnny. But then we know I'm odd. HAHA! Until these fellows I always preferred originals. Please make a reaction to a young, very popular singer in world. Videos from this singer collect hundreds of millions of views. Diana Ankudinova is now only 17 years old. She has a very unique, very deep, clear voice. Dr. Marc Reynolds (Voice Teacher, Stage Director, Performance Coach and Consultant, and Acting Coach) said about the performance of this girl: Really really exceptional! Even if you ignore her age, even is she was 10, 20, 30 years older, this is still a really exceptional performer here that we're seeing. But at her age, unbelievable. Really really exceptional! Absolutely gorgeous! And again, not just because of her voice, because her performing, watching how nuanced and engaging her performance is. Ah, it's just so stunning. It's absolutely amazing.

Hurt was not a Jonny Cash song. Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails wrote that song in the early 90s. It was on the downward Spiral album in 94. It's been covered by Jonny Cash and a couple other singers, which is very rare, mostly because Trent Reznor is very possessive of his music, and Hurt was a very personal song to him. For me, Jonny Cash doing a cover of Hurt gave me the same feeling as Home Free doing a cover for a classic Jonny Cash song for you. I love Jonny's cover of Hurt, but Trent Reznor wrote that song about a very personal struggle, and it's just not the same coming from anyone else. Edit: It might be important to add, however, that Trent did say that the song wasn't his anymore when he heard Jonny's version of it.

Hi JL! Oh I was worried whe you said this was your favorite Johnny Cash song because I knew what was coming! It’s like a totally different song. They added a jazzy, bluesy feel to it with the chords and the adlibs as opposed to the pure country of Johnny Cash’ s original. On the first listen I didn’t really like it but it’s grown on me a lot. And there are aspects of the video that are so entertaining...like Tim’s evil smirk when he hits the really low note, and their playing around with the mugshot backdrop so Chance is 5’1” and Rob is 6’8”, and Adam’s gun sounds. It’s great to see you and I hope you’re doing well today.

First time I heard this, I didn't quite care for it, because the Cash version stood out, but about the third time I heard it, it suddenly dawned on me that this is a prison song, and a train song...and all of the sounds and harmonies sound like a lonesome train. The percussion sounds like train wheels on the track, and the engine, Austin sounds like a mournful train whistle...so did the harmonies on the line "Don't ever play with guns". (sounded like wailing on that whistle as a warning...not to mention Adam cocking the shotgun right after that phrase) So that separated it completely from the Cash version for me and made me appreciate the complexity of the arrangement. As for visually, lmao... Tim looks like the lifer, Austin and Chance are the bad boys, and Adam looks like the guy you don't mess with cause that dude is insane man..and Rob looks like the poor accountant that got caught cooking the books, he doesn't belong with those hard core criminals lol.

Most "covers" are NOT made to sound exactly like the original. What woudl the purpose be to do the same thing that's already been done? Most HF covers far surpass the original, as they throw in their own uniqueness to it. IF you're trying to find a "clone", you won't find it with HF. And, many forget completely that Johnny, and the others, had a band! HF IS the band!

Yay! acapella day is always a good day for me. 😀 It makes perfect sense, that when you have an original in your mind, you have to get used to such a changed version. I said elsewhere that it seems to me that Home Free are paying tribute by not trying to copy Johnny Cash's version - they're never going to be him - but by making their own best version of the song. I didn't have the same attachment to the original, so it was easy for me, but I can't blame anyone for not being able to make that leap immediately.

Hi, JL!!! If you do the Sound Of Silence thing, plz add Tim Foust & Peter Hollens' version too! I think they manage to bridge the two; the original vs Disturb's. I understand what you're saying about the contrast to the original. When somebody covers a favorite, it's very hard to remove the one you love from your mindset to hear it in a different way. I usually have to hear it several times before I can accept the new & like it. It depends on how much they change it, I guess. This one, I had no problem with tho. I absolutely love this more upbeat version. I just love the "jazzy-bluesy, train-rolling-along-the-tracks" themed harmony & beat throughout. Then Adam's "far-off" harmonica whistle just caps it off!! Love this arrangement by producer, Darren Rust!
