Actually, the version that is used in Brandon's review, although the packaging clearly states that the film is rated 'G', is the International Version of the film. You can thank Warners for being highly observant on this one. After Warners found out the mistake that was made with the release, they pulled all copies still on shelves, but later released the same incorrect G-Rated version alongside another Hammer film, Moon Zero Two, on a double feature DVD set. I don't know if those were pulled off shelves also. When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth is getting a Blu-ray release on February 28. They're releasing it Uncut and just to make sure that people know that it's not the G-rated cut this time, they're adding a disclaimer that reads: "This edition of WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH is the original International Theatrical release version which contains nudity."
@georgeowain

fake is G rating had different standards back when th is film was made including violence and nudity.. which is one reason they created PG-13. what would now be consider PG-13 was back down just pg and what is now thought to be PG was G go figure. A Movie has to work hard to get that X rating
@LinkMarioSamus
5 жыл бұрын
@@Marveryn 2001: A Space Odyssey and True Grit were also rated G back then. There's no way either of those movies would keep that rating now, but in the case of Space Odyssey I'd say it's fairly justified - not much in the way of explicit content I can remember. But oh wait it has apes beating up other apes and HAL asphyxiating people so never mind? On the other hand, Midnight Cowboy was given an X-rating by the filmmakers due to a psychologist warning that it could encourage kids to be gay. It was quickly re-rated R after its Oscar wins.

This is one of those childhood favorites of mine that still remains in my favorites, a real rare gem - I probably wouldn't put it in my top 100 or 150, but it would make the top 200 out of 300 (hey, if EMPIRE Magazine can create a Top 300, why can't I?) Technically speaking, the film is really a fantasy, but does belong to straight-forward science-fiction as an example of a sci-fi sub-genre called "prehistoric romance", which like QUEST FOR FIRE and the EARTH'S CHILDREN series by Jean M. Auel, attempts to depict a time in the life of primitive hominids long before the invention of history, when the hominids made a discovery or breakthrough development that led to their gradual rise above brutish instinctual living and on the path to early civilization. Yes, it has dinosaurs and humans co-existing, but the fantasy elements don't really intrude on the human story-line, and yes, despite the cast of humans being played by contemporary semi-nude actors without ape makeup and, uh, much attire, there is some earnest attempt to depict primitive human life (and this is coming from a guy who's not a creationist!). That being said, I guess I'll go on record saying that while ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. may be considered the quintessential dinosaur-and-cavegirl flick, I actually like this one a lot better (and even Leonard Maltin said the same in his Film-Video Guide, giving this the full three stars over ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.'s two-and-a-half!). Co-writer and director Val Guest (who also did THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE and the first two QUATERMASS films for Hammer, and was one of the five directors for the James Bond spoof of CASINO ROYALE with Peter Sellers) disowned this due to some difficulties involving some incidents in principal photography shooting and lack of post-production editing control, saying its his worst film out of a long filmmaking career, but it's not bad at all. It has a haunting score by Mario Nascimbene, the acting is convincing (despite a 44-word vocabulary that would be limiting), the non-stock-footage stop-motion animation by Jim Danforth is still impressive (love the mama dinosaur, Ramphorhynchus and Elasmosaurus the best!), and there is a pretty neat story involving the early emergence of the moon and how the connection between the characters was affected by this change. And despite Victoria Vetri's more recent crime, which shocked me upon first reading it online, I will admit that this Playboy Playmate being in this movie (who was actually brunette and also had already been a seasoned actress, appearing in ROSEMARY'S BABY and many TV series including STAR TREK and THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., credited sometimes under the pseudonym Angela Dorian) was responsible for a lot of my giddy teenage fantasies apart from Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jessica Biel. I actually got the WB DVD release which put WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH's international unrated version with MOON ZERO TWO shortly before it was pulled off the shelves, although the unrated version had already been uploaded online prior to its release. Now knowing that the unrated version of WDRTE will finally get a Blu-Ray release alone, I have much reason to celebrate.
