IRL Davis Webb somehow beat out Baker Mayfield for the starting job at Texas Tech, then after Mayfield transferred to OU Webb was beaten out for the starting job the next season by Patrick Mahomes, and wound up being a grad transfer to Cal. So the Colbert thing makes a lot more sense now.

HB Belafonte has a 99 carrying so I wouldn't give up on him just because of the two horrific fumbles. I would consider it a fluke. Unless he does it again. ;) Oh, and Thomas should get the overwhelming majority of HB snaps. Really, only come out when stamina demands.

*Date: November 9th, 2018* *Time: 7:30 PM* Texas A&M Aggies (0-1) 36 @ #7 Kalispell Warhawks (1-0) 42 *Colbert vs. Warren* Heading into this highly touted Week One matchup there were two stories that no college football fan can ignore. The first story this game holds is the title defense of the surging Kalispell Warhawks, who, almost a decade ago, had just started playing in the FBS, starting off in the Mountain West Conference. Year by year, under the expert tutelage of new head coach Leon Daniels, who was a former preferred walk-on Middle Linebacker with the Minnesota Gophers during his playing days, Kalispell improved, and dominated not only the Mountain West Conference, but College Football as a whole. The second shed light on the adventures of Justin Colbert, who was recruited by the Kalispell Warhawks at the end of Quarterback Marquise Walker's Junior season and used primarily as a backup for the then senior quarterback. Once Walker graduated however, Colbert was touted to be the starting Quarterback for the still up-and-coming Warhawks, that is, until Freshman Athlete Brandon Warren joined the Quarterback Corps and stole the show. For three years Warren lead the Warhawks to excellence, whereas Justin Colbert was used sparingly, or as an emergency QB whenever Brandon Warren was injured. Despite leading the Warhawks to a National Championship in Warren's absence, during the offseason, Justin Colbert decided to transfer from Kalispell University to play his final season as a college quarterback with the Texas A&M Aggies, following heel and toe with Kalispell's former Offensive Coordinator, Stan McBride, who was hired to be the head coach of the Aggies. In an interview prior to the game, both Coach Stan McBride and Senior Quarterback Justin Colbert made it clear that they weren't to take their former team lightly, with Justin Colbert almost guaranteeing A&M fans the upset against his former team, stating that he'd "make the [Kalispell] Warhawks regret making him a clipboard holder for Brandon [Warren]." And in the first half, Colbert was putting some meaning behind his words. The first pass of Colbert's A&M career was perhaps a sign of things to come, as what was supposed to be a small checkdown pass to running back Jeremiah Perry turned into a 17-yard reception. From there, Justin Colbert got the offense running, and the 8 Play, 75 yard drive was capped off by a beautiful pass from Justin Colbert to Wide Receiver Lance Mitchell, giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead on the defending champion Warhawks. All eyes were on the defending champs, and the first play, like the Aggies, had promise for the Warhawks. Junior Quarterback Brandon Warren's first pass was completed and turned into a 13 yard reception for new slot receiver Justin Payne, who was big for the Warhawks last season in a lot of ways. The second reception kept the ball moving, as Senior Tight End Hayden Jean-Charles gained 21 yards. After those big plays, however, the Warhawks had to turn to their kicker Rick Thomas to make it a 7-3 game. Everyone in attendance saw that the Warhawk offense looked slow and sluggish, like they had no chemistry despite several starters returning to the team. Colbert was looking to put some more emphasis on his pre-game interview, and his first pass of the second drive went to Cliff McKeon for 15 yards. Despite this, the drive stalled after two more Justin Colbert passes, and the Aggies made it a 10-3 ball game in their favor. Remember how earlier I said that the Warhawk offense looked slow out of the gates? Well, Brandon Warren throwing a pass he knew he shouldn't have thrown didn't help, as it was easily intercepted by Linebacker Kevin Carey, who took the ball back eleven yards to the Kalispell 18-yard line. From there, Justin Colbert led the offense to yet another easy score, as Cliff McKeon gave Justin Colbert two passing touchdowns in the first _quarter,_ giving the Aggies a 17-3 lead over the defending champions. Stop me if you've heard this before - remember how I said Kalispell's offense looked slow out of the gates earlier. Well, it gets worse, as a design screen pass for the Sophomore Runningback Marty Belafonte goes from bad to worse, and he fumbled the ball after a big hit by the Aggies, and the fumble was returned for a touchdown, giving the Aggies a 24-3 lead. Keep in mind, we're still in the first quarter. Kalispell fans were irate. Not only because Justin Colbert, their former backup QB, was lighting up their secondary, which was the deepest position on the defense, not only because their former Offensive Coordinator Stan McBride was coaching for the upset against his former team, but that the reigning, defending national champion Warhawks had no answers for a team who last year, had 70 receptions total, with 75% of those receptions going to the fullback. After another Kalispell 3-and-out, fans started to worry. And that's when Mario Townsend made his presence known. With around 8 and a half minutes to go in the second quarter, Mario Townsend shoots the gap and intercepts Justin Colbert's pass, running it back into the endzone to make it a 24-10 Aggie lead. The Aggies responded with a field goal, still holding a comfortable seventeen-point lead over the defending champion Warhawks. All eyes were now on Junior Quarterback Brandon Warren. With the pressure at its highest point, Warren produced, hitting his favorite targets, Justin Payne and Hayden Jean-Charles, while calling his own number during the drive, lead the Warhawks back in it, throwing a passing touchdown to Justin Payne, making it a 27-17 Aggie lead. After a pair of three-and-outs, the Aggies start to rev up the engines again, as Justin Colbert threw a bomb to Cliff McKeon, and he came down with it, resulting in a 46-yard reception, getting the Aggies in scoring range _again._ After two Boogie Turner sacks, the Kalispell offense, specifically Brandon Warren, turned the ball over a second time in the first half. The Aggies couldn't capitalize however, as they kicked another field goal, extending their lead to 33-17 in the first half. The second half was a completely different story, as Senior Running Back Kyle Thomas blazed past the Aggie Defense for 45 yards. Five plays later, Brandon Warren would find who else but Hayden Jean-Charles in the endzone, cutting the Aggie lead to eight after the successful two-point conversion attempt to Antwan Knightley. With about seven minutes left on the clock, the Warhawks were storming back, down 33-25. Texas A&M responded with a 3-and-out, and their struggles didn't come from Justin Colbert, who had a phenomenal game, but the running back Jeremiah Perry, who couldn't get anything going against a stout Warhawk rushing defense. With Kalispell surging once again, Brandon Warren starts off the second drive of the second half with a beautiful pass straight down the middle to Hayden Jean-Charles for a 15 yard reception. The Warhawks capped off the second drive of the second half with a field goal, cutting the Aggie lead to 5, by the score of 33-28. With the Warhawks scoring 11 unanswered points, all eyes were now on Stan McBride, Justin Colbert, and the Texas A&M Aggies. They'd let a very, _very_ dangerous team get back into a game they had all but secured in the first quarter. If Texas A&M wanted to show the college football world that they were a legit team, they'd need to finish off the Warhawks and complete the upset. They responded with a 3-and-out, and Aggie fans were _not_ amused. Kalispell harps on the opportunity, or so we all thought. Brandon Warren throws his third interception of the game at around midfield, that interception being the fourth turnover overall for the Warhawks. The Texas A&M offense kind of froze, only scoring three points in the entire second half, and that was on the first drive of the fourth quarter. The Warhawks were aiming to storm back, and in a big way, as after the field goal to make the score 36-28 in favor of the Aggies, Brandon Warren lead the Warhawk offense down the field, with a potential game-changing pass completion to the redshirt Freshman Colt Sulley for a gain of 17 yards. Throughout this last crucial Drive, Brandon Warren trusted either his own number, Hayden Jean Charles, or newer receivers Antwan Knightley and Colt Sulley, but it was a one-handed touchdown catch from Carl Joyce that put the Warhawks two points away from tying the game, storming back from a 21-point deficit in the first half. However, the two-point conversion failed, keeping the Warhawks behind two. Once again, all eyes were on Justin Colbert and the Texas A&M Aggies. They, once again, froze, responding with a 3-and-out. Brandon Warren was in an environment he knew all-too well - the Two-Minute Drill Two minutes to get from Point A to Point B, and secure a Warhawk comeback win. His first pass of the drive went to Marty Belafonte, who fumbled yet again, though thankfully, the ball was fallen on by Hayden Jean Charles. This may prompt Coach Leon Daniels to remove Belafonte from the offense as a whole, and turn things to the third string running back Marcus Payne to be the compliment to Senior Kyle Thomas, making Belafonte a special-teams exclusive player. Despite Warren calling his own number a myriad of times, the Aggies remained stout, that is, until a 3rd and 2 checkdown to Justin Payne turned into a 20-yard reception, getting the Warhawks in field goal range with 1:21 to go in the game. Through my sources, Kalispell wanted to run the clock out as much as they could, and trust the leg of Rick Thomas, though that wasn't in the playbook for Marcus Payne, who ran it into the endzone with 14 seconds remaining, sealing the game for the Warhawks, and after a two-point conversion, giving the Warhawks the win, with a final score of 42-36.

*FROM ECSTASY TO AGONY FOR COLBERT* The last time *Justin Colbert* was in Warhawk stadium, he was wearing the home team's uniform. And the last time he wore that uniform, he was leading Kallispell to one of the most unlikely national title wins in college football history, coming off the bench to relieve an injured *Brandon Warren* after being all but written off as a college QB and even accused of faking an injury in the season finale out of sheer spite. Many expected Colbert to declare for the draft afterwards and go out on top. Instead, he swerved everyone by electing to switch teams as a grad transfer, heading to Texas A&M. "I have no ill will towards Justin," said Warhawks coach *Leon Daniels* at the time. "Everyone's got to make choices in life they feel is best for them." And, in a made for TV matchup tailor-made for drama, it was all going so well for Colbert in the beginning. Daniels may have had no ill will when he left, but he almost certainly had to be feeling ill as Colbert sliced and diced his remade defense, missing three starters and two NFL draft picks from the defensive line, for 17 points on his first three drives, with an Aggies defensive score on top of that for a 24-3 lead that had the home crowd as quiet as a monk with a vow of silence. At last, it seemed as if Colbert would have the ultimate vindication after being shoved and shunted aside by Warren two seasons ago. And then it happened. LB *Mario Townsend* stepped in front of a Colbert pass and didn't stop running until he was in the end zone. The crowd went from sullen to psyched, and the game was never the same for Colbert or the Aggies after that. Colbert didn't go gently into the night, driving his team into the red zone time and time again, but somehow, some way, he couldn't get them into the end zone. The offense went from first half studs to second half duds, with just 56 total yards and a single FG after intermission. Warren wound up coming out on top again, playing the hero despite all his mistakes and miscues (three picks) and then afterwards... Afterwards Colbert didn't take it well, showing that the rumors of his temper at being benched last season might not have been just rumors after all. He cursed. He yelled. He screamed. He threw things and left the visitors' locker room in a far worse state than before the game started. Even after finishing the national title game a winner he had been bested by Brandon Warren again, his lack of mobility becoming increasingly apparent as the game wore on and the Kallispell pass rush got to him over and over, after it had been nonexistent early. "He's really frustrated right now and needs some space," said brand new Texas A&M coach *Stan McBride* another Warhawk transplant who was calling the plays last season. "This game meant a lot to him for obvious reasons." But really, nothing more needed to be said.

Good game, but I dont like that you gave Texas A&M the Kalispell offensive playbook. A good coach bases the offense around the personnel that they have, meaning having Colbert run read options just didn't look right. If the playbook matched more of what his strengths are (like air raid), then the result of the game may have been different.
@samuelstensgaard4828

To be fair, a lot of coaches are like that. They try and make players do stuff they're not comfortable with because they're too stubborn to mold the system.

@Vader Minion Fair enough, but you're not going to see a coach with a pocket passer QB, who cant run, call read option plays.
@Zaccyboy14
6 жыл бұрын
@Brady I guess what I should have said was that good coaches make tweaks to their offense depending on the personnel. For example, at Ohio State, they still run a spread offense and much of the plays look the same that they have ever since Urban Meyer got there. However, that spread offense today has a lot more passing plays called and rarely read options, if at all. Which is in direct contrast to when Braxton Miller or JT Barrett were at QB and Ezekiel Elliott was the RB. The point I'm making is that Colbert shouldn't have been running read option plays. I know that this because of the CPU but it just bothers me because I really think Colbert and A&M would've won the game had that 1 play been eliminated. Its just a game so it's not serious or anything, but I wanted to point that out.

Of course Warhawk Stadium is Top 10. Warhawk football is what they eat, sleep, and breathe in a town of ~20,000.

Well, I guess it wouldn't be a Kalispell game if Cane didn't throw at least one interception to a receiver that was completely covered.

I’ve been saying it since day one. Justin Colbert is a stud and should’ve gotten 20x more touches than he did. Really disappointed in the decision to not play him

Hopefully this season you can get that deep throwing down bc it's there. You jus gotta move around with that mobile QB. I'm digging the LB starters. Nice team. Jus hopefully you upgraded your reads Wow nice 1st Drive for Colbert. Btw i know this is your Channel but Payne would never be my back up. 11 wouldn't be my returner id put someone else back there but he's a HR threat Payne isn't. We'll see if you switched it up

And Jordan would easily be a slot CB or the Nickelback. Damn 23-3. Boy you run wayyyyy too much and then you don't run enough with the QB on passing plays. Ugly start in your title defense Horrible INTs so far. D-line keeping you in it

I bet no i am sure that Justin Colbert will be a higher draft pick then Brandon Warren all because Justin is 6'1 and Brandon is 5'11. I guess we will wait and see

Very true i agree but despite being a fun game and a cane putting together a great series (one of the best on youtube) ncaa 14 does not let quarterbacks smaller than 6'0 get drafted. I also think they have to be over 200 pounds if I am not mistaken

IKR? This was a problem last season as well. He'd have gotten triple digits easily if he'd carried more than 13 times.

Wanted to try getting others involved and they didn't show much. Thomas will get a lot of work this year and I think he's the best receiving back too.
