An insight I've gained from my machine learning research: good evaluation metrics are often poor optimization metrics. Just because launch angle and exit velocity (really should be "exit speed" since it's always reported as a scalar, not a vector) may correlate with good hitting does not mean that optimizing for these things results in good hitting. Sacrificing other, less quantifiable qualities in your swing in order to hit the ball harder may be a poor strategy.

“Hitting is hard.” Indeed. For this 66 year old, the approach now is all wrong. The ball should be driven from whence it came. You should be balanced. With no agenda. If the ball is inside, pull it. If outside, drive it to the opposite side. Focus on always making strong contact.

This "advanced metrics" stuff is killing the M's offense. Some is fine but not every hitter can be Julio Rodriguez, not every hitter is best suited to try to hit the ball as hard as they can to the pull side on every single at bat no matter the count. Ichiro didn't do that, Tony Gwynn didn't do that, Rod Carew didn't do that, (I could go on) and they were amazing hitters. Ty France destroyed his career because he went to Driveline (I have my thoughts on them too..) and tried to be a power hitter when he should have concentrated on hitting the ball the other way and getting on base. I think the game and the Mariners specifically need a little more old school mentality in the locker room and in the decisions at the plate.

Here's an insight I've gained from my machine learning and optimization research (currently working on a PhD): good evaluation metrics are often poor optimization metrics. Launch angle and exit velocity (really should be "exit speed" since it's always reported as a scalar, not a vector) may correlate with good hitting, but that does not mean that optimizing for these things results in good hitting. Sacrificing other, less quantifiable qualities in your swing in order to hit the ball harder is likely a poor strategy. Unfortunately, many people, even very smart ones, do not understand this distinction.

Exactly 💯 anyone he knows baseball could see it, everyone in the team out front of ANY off speed pitch and you see it in the Whole teams SPRAY CHART!!! That Philosophy is going to set a STRIKEOUT RECORD never seen before by a Mariners Franchise!!! Driveline Ruined JP and FRANCE!!! Pull side and Launch angle when BOTH of them always historically went the other way!!!! Looknat Winker's numbers, how about Abraham Toro in Oakland, Cabby in TB? I think the Baseball Gods that DeHart is gone and I'm crossing my Fingers Dipoto is Next!!! GO M's!!!

Money has wrecked sports. Power Stats are all that matter to hitters because they negotiate contracts based on production. There ain't no money in hitting to right side with no outs to advance runner from 2nd to 3rd . Winning is secondary to individual stats
