Bratislava Kalesi
Bratislava Castle
Historical castle located in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The rectangular structure with four corner towers is located right on the bank of the Danube river. Due to its size and location, it has become one of the main symbols of Bratislava for centuries.
The first written source about the castle, which has four entrances, namely the Vienna Gate, Zigmund Gate, Nicholas Gate and Leopold Gate, belongs to 907. The castle, which became an important center during the Great Moravian Empire, has not lost its status for centuries. During the reign of Maria Theresia, between 1761 and 1766, the castle was used as a royal residence by undergoing extensive changes and gaining its modern appearance almost today. The castle was bombed by Napoleon Bonaparte's army in 1809. Then, the castle, which was destroyed by the fire in 1811, was only started to be restored in 1957. Restoration work, which was interrupted, was completed in 1968. Today it hosts important events as well as the Slovak National Museum.
Devin Castle
It is a castle in Devín, a district of Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia.
The castle has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age and was fortified since the Bronze and Iron Ages and later by the Celts and Romans.
The cliff (altitude 212 meters) is an ideal place for a castle, as it is at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The fort overlooks an important trade route along the Danube, as well as a branch of the Amber Road.
The castle stands on the border between Slovakia and Austria, just inside Slovak territory. The border runs from west to east along the Morava River and then the Danube. Before 1989, the Iron Curtain between the East Bloc and the West ran right in front of the castle. Although the fort was open to the public, the surrounding area constituted a limited military zone and was heavily fortified with watchtowers and barbed wire. After the Velvet Revolution, the area was demilitarized.
The most photographed part of the castle is the tiny watchtower known as the Maiden's Tower. It balances dangerously on a lonely rock, separate from the main castle, and has spawned countless legends of imprisoned love girls jumping to their deaths.
