Did you know Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan. I found out about that when I visited São Paulo. A place called Liberdade within the city.

***** I would visit Liberdade on Sundays during the summer, when I stayed for a couple of months. The younger generation eventually become standard locals/nationals, as similar to any country. Especially 3rd generation. I thought Koreans were concentrated in another area called Bras. I know Mooca has Italian influence, and that is about it. The city was too huge to explore everything in the small amount of time I was there. I do want to go back eventually. Also to become fluent in Brazilian Portuguese.

+alanguages +Otávio de Toledo I'm from São Paulo. I heard it was the largest population outside of Japan. And of course there are districts of chinese and korean communities, but mostly japanese downwards in Liberdade area in São Paulo. São Paulo is huge, Mooca has italian influence it's true and you have a neighborhood called Bixiga which is considered the "Little Italy" of São Paulo and it is not whithin the Mooca district.
@alanguages

+rickrvo The largest Japanese population is Japan, then Brazil. That is why I mentioned it was the 2nd largest population outside of Japan. I stayed and talked to people living in Mooca and noticed some of the words they said are Italian pronunciation. Casa is when I noticed it. I want to eventually return to São Paulo and stay for more than 8 months. I went to Livraria Cultura many times, but the store is very expensive. It is a great city and helped me orientate myself, especially the subway, so many people. I know even about 9 months won't be enough to explore all around.

Besides, the country's territory is actually wider (from West to East) than longer (from North to South). @@Wesjapa100 well, this comment made me take a fun wikipedia trip. Apparently the entire US is about as big as China, and depending on how you count costal territories the US is bigger than China. There are a lot of Alaskan islands helping that number, but Alaska is very much counted. By the same metric where China is smaller than the US you wouldn't just be able to remove the ~600K km of Alaska and see that continental Brazil is bigger than the US But the US has a *LOT* more territories than Brazil, no matter how you put it, the continuous US territory has a smaller landmass than continuous Brazil.

Hey great video! Just one thing in the geographic aspect: you seemed to find it astonishing that there is snow in the southern Brazil, well sorry to disappoint but I live in here at the south and the first time I saw snow was when I went to Europe. Brazilians tend to love snow and be mesmerized by it (mostly because the media portrait snow heavily in Christmas-time, but it's usually 40°C during that time), so, whenever there is like, the smallest snowfall (like a 2 minute snowfall) it becomes huge news throughout the country. And the economy is not so good, you've used a cover by "The Economist" showing Brazil taking off. Well that cover is actually from around 2004, when everything was fine and yes Brazil was growing as hell, but the economic scene has since changed. The Economist has even made a second cover to address that, with the Cristo Redentor like falling, titled "Has Brazil blown it?" (September 2013). But I know these insights can only be given by a insider, so good job!

Some time ago, we were at the brink of a civil war, though the heat is cooling down now that the president is about to get impeached. It is very interesting for me to watch videos from people outside Brazil about it, because in common sense there's a sad, but nevertheless understandable, feeling that says "If you have the chance to live outside Brazil, do it without thinking twice." Brazilian Sign Language (or LIngua BRAsileira de Sinais -> LIBRAS) is an official language since 2002. ii) If you add up canon portuguese with its regional variations (not dialects) and with lots of native/indigenous languages and lots of along-the-borders dialects(yes, now dialects) you will get to the astonishing result of roughly 160 languages.

Pretty accurate for its length, though I wish it talked a little more about Northeast and North regions. Positive points maybe, like Northeast's very know tourism industry and North's strong indigenous heritage.

I really like your videos. Thank you for posting them. However, I would like to point out that Brazil is larger, not smaller, than the continental US (the contiguous 48 states). While the area for the combined 48 states is 8,080464.25 square kilometers, for Brazil it is 8,514, 215 square kilometers. What makes the United States bigger is Alaska and Hawaii.

Amazing job! I would just add to the religion topic where you said Brazil has a large number of catholics, that this number is decresaing over time, meanwhile there's a steady growth in the number of evangelical people. And it is also bringing the issues of evangelical leaders involved too much with politics, which didn't happen with the same intensity when catholicism was almost absolute in Brazil. It is a tough debate, but I just wanted you to know. Keep it up!

Interesting to mention that, due to immigration, some cities in Brazil speak German, Japanese and Italian. There is even an official German dialect from Brazil (riograndenser hunsrückisch).

Great video! Maybe some day you can talk more about South of Brazil which has cities with two official languages, like Riograndenser Hunsrückisch, Talian and Pomeranian language, some of them spoken only in Brazil and no longer in their country of origin; and our indigenous languages too. Although we have just one official languages, there are over 200 languages spoken here.

For foreign... Brazil= soccer and samba :(

About transfering the capital from Rio to Brasilia, the official explanation may be that it was more central to the country, thus allowng for better manegement, and it may have done so but really, it took our representatives out of the intelectual ellite and organized workers unions' reach, those more given to protests and rallies, and placed them very far out of reach. When Rio was the capital, if you had a beef with the president, well you went downtown and screeamed outside their windows. Nowadays, who has the time and money to march all the way to brasilia?
@FelipeCarreiro
5 жыл бұрын
The idea of transferring the capital of Rio to the center of Brazil was very ancient, still of the time of the Empire. But it was done in a very wrong way. Calling Niemeyer to plan the city was horrible because he created an isolated, artificial, obscure place, away from everything and everyone. Brasilia should have the largest population in the country, receiving migrants from all regions, but there are only isolated buildings in the middle of the semi-desert. Brasilia is a failed city project, it will never be like Rio, Sao Paulo or Salvador.

@@FelipeCarreiro Puts, tu cagou legal..

I am Brazilian and I thought your considerations had a little of prejudice. I speak and study a few languages and never had an opportunity to watch the "GEOgraphy Focus" Channel. It is probably the common sense that samba and beach are the way of life. For an example, I cannot say an alaskian thinks the same way of an floridian ( US speaking) , anyway. Nice video on my country, as a brazilian linguistic, the best one ever. Bom Trabalho.

as a Brazilian, it was a good summary. but I don't really like the image of people in a ski collony - when we have snow in the south it is like snow in Paris: for some minutes or hours. period. no ski. no snowboard. I miss some basic information like: young democracy ( since 1988, after the military government ), some examples of imigration in the south ( german, italian, poland, ucraine, etc ) and some interesting facts like: we have a lot of japaneses in Brazil ( in the state of São Paulo we have many cities with huge japanese population ), also a lot of libaneses, in the north-east we have some netherland people for some years too... but the video will became larger and larger. congrats for the research.
