This is a review of the Break Point Standard, a pre-shrunk, budget-friendly gi. The one-piece jacket is made of a standard cotton pearl weave with a sturdy foam collar, and the pants are a lightweight cotton canvas. This IBJJF approved gi comes in white, blue and black, weighs four pounds and retails for 99.95 to 104.95 on BJJ Warehouse.com
Design
Design on the Break Point Standard is minimal, especially compared to other gis in the Break Point line up. The Standard has black and yellow patches on each sleeve as well as on the upper left leg of the pants. The colors look great against the blue fabric of the gi. WHite and black branded seam tape runs along the inside of the sleeve and pant cuffs. The edges aren't folded over, but the scratchiness is less than I thought it would be. Final touches on the gi include blue trim and black contrast stitching. Overall it's a simple, nice looking kimono.
Fit and Feel
Break point sizing runs a touch large. I'm 5'8" and 160 lbs, and I'm at the very bottom of their A2 size range. If you're my size or smaller, I'd definitely recommend grabbing the A1 instead because you won't get this gi to shrink very much. You can see in the measurements chart that after a couple cold washes and machine dries, I lost about an inch in each sleeve, and inch in the jacket length and just over an inch in the pants. The jacket is moderately soft like most pearl weaves, but pants are excellent. Lightweight and soft.
Build Quality
This gi has the standard arm pit, side vent and crotch reinforcements along with triple stitching throughout the major stress zones. Knee reinforcements run from thigh to mid shin to add extra comfort and durability to the pants. I always pay extra attention to contrast stitching, and the work on the Break Point is excellent. Stitching runs straight and true throughout the gi.
In Action
The Standard is a lot of fun to roll in. I really like the pants as they are light, flowy, comfortable and slick, which made breaking grips easier. And by slick I mean they have that brushed cotton feel to them. I also like the collar, which is surprisingly stout. I'm a big fan of heavier collars, and the Standard definitely delivers there.
One thing to note is that the sleeve cuffs are about a centimeter wider than an average A2, which means Ezekiel chokes for days.
The Standard performed well, and I'd feel entirely comfortable using this in competition or as a durable training gi.
Conclusion
The Standard is, well, pretty standard. It lives up to its name in that regard. About the only thing I'd like to see is four belt loops instead of two and a rope drawstring instead of the flat. Other than that, it's a solid gi at a great price. In this day of limited releases and prices that keep creeping closer to the $200 mark, Break Point is part of a growing number of companies offering high quality kimonos at much lower prices. If you're looking for value without the sticker shock, the Standard is worth a look.
