The right thing to do would be to make the hard shoulder safer by adding ERAs and monitoring it properly via technology - the good bits of Smart Motorway design - but ensuring a continuous, dedicated and permanent safe haven is always in place. 3 live lanes is quite enough, especially when flow is improved via active traffic control.

So you want a hard shoulder, you don’t want congestion and you don’t want to pay more. It doesn’t work like that. 100 die every year in the hard shoulder, 1504 die on other roads, dual carriageways, which often have 3 lanes don’t have a hard shoulder either, why no outrage at that? Have you worked on the roads? Are you aware of why cars break down? Are you aware of why people stop on the hard shoulder? Are you aware how stupid people are when driving? Previous Highway England commercials have been straight and informative. Why use “humour” for such a sensitive and emotive subject, and then launch the ad in a week when there is a new media story about the inherent damages of “all live lanes” virtually every day? If they want to gain the trust of the public back, Highways England should take this crass ad (that tells us all what we already know) off air now, and bank the TV airtime for a new spot that tells the public more about the control centres and the comprehensive camera system for Smart Motorways which many still don’t know about. “We’re watching over you” Then on the actual Smart Motorways, since there is meant to be less traffic at the moment in lockdown, make Lane 1 default to having a red X above it at all times, so people get used to seeing what a red X actually looks like. Then only use all lanes, removing the X in high traffic conditions.

(It’s better to have a narrow hard shoulder, than nothing at all) At present the width of lanes 1,2,3,4 on a smart motorway total = 14.6 meters. My suggestion was to add a hard shoulder of 2.6meters wide, by the reduction of other lanes width. If you add 2.6 +3.3+3.3+2.9+2.5 = 14.6 meters I suggested 2.6 meters, as apparently Google search says in UK the widest refrigerated HGVs are 2.6 meters wide. So the hard shoulder should be adequate.

Smart motorways suck. You need to be able to get to a safety zone before you can pull into it, and if you can't reach one before your car stops moving then you're fucked. Bring back old motorways with a hard shoulder!!!!!

Is this a joke? 1) Where is the data that justifies the money spent on this advert telling people to pull over if they have car troubles on the motorway? Do people seriously just stop dead in their lane? 2) Singing flies? Really? That was the best way to get this message across? 3) Is there also a campaign to arrest the idiots that need telling this for dangerous driving?

I do not understand the purpose of this advert. A few years ago, Highways England ran adverts telling drivers to stay out of Motorway lanes with a red X above them because of an obstruction, but because of the huge increase in Smart Motorway deaths they have made this one instead. Is Highways England saying that people who broke down are responsible for the accident and any injuries and deaths are their own fault. Or, is it a very cynical attempt to divert the public’s focus away from Highways England’s own foul up that Smart Motorways are dangerous and should be banned. Either way, this advert is crass, vulgar and insensitive and shows a disgusting waste of lives and money.

The Highway Code tells you to stay out of a lane with a red X on it! A high increase in smart motorway deaths? Where are you picking your facts from? 1516 a year die on every other road. I don’t see any outrage there. How bizarre. People and their uneducated opinions, dear dear.

@@metalheartmugglebody.8328 Ahem yes. Are you aware 100 people a year are killed on the hard shoulder? Are you aware 12 a year die on a smart motorway? Are you aware no one has been killed in an ERA bay? Are you away over 1500 people a year are killed on other roads that no one seems to care about? Why is that?! Why do you think there is a campaign to go left? As people don’t!! They stop in whichever lane they are in. They stand IN FRONT of their cars and call the RAC, they DO NOT climb over the barrier or stand anywhere safe.

Go left into a live Iane where you have only seconds to live before someone hits you from behind. if a car breaks down it makes no difference weather its 500 metres or 10 metres from a layby, if it wont move, it wont move. They put the barrier so close to lane 1 that you can't pull out of the live lane or even get out of the car. I stopped driving on them I only clicked on here to comment, I will not watch this pathetic advert.
@911HRW

Only seconds? You are aware when a car travelling at 60+ that breaks down doesn’t stop immediately! You are also aware most breakdowns are avoidable. Also you must be aware that 70 dual and 3 lane carriageways also don’t have a hard shoulder so what happens when you stop there in an emergency?
@sonnyday6210

@@911HRW Oh it's OK then, you can coast 1.5 miles Uphill with electric hand brake stuck on to a layby, then can't get in it cos someone else's in it?. Cos that's how far apart they made them to save money. Chances of reaching them are very slim. 58 peoples families will confirm it.

Why not just release a professional P.S.A about road safety, I'm born and bred English and couldn't really make out what you were trying to say besides "go left", god forbid someone who stuggles to understand spoken English listens to this. A half second clip of the engine light coming on isn't really a clear enough indication that this is about car troubles. Basically, stop trying to be funny or unique and teach people what they need to do.
