Lots of good information thank you. My garage is slowly turning into a workshop. I almost changed my 15 to 20 Amp breaker. I figured you can't just do that, but wasn't sure why. Thanks for protentional protecting me and my family.

I'm glad you found the video helpful. If you can run a new 12 gauge wire from the panel to the garage then you can have 20 amp outlets in the garage. But running new wire from a breaker panel through a finished house can sometimes be tricky.

I live in a huge building. My lights dim for just a second when I turn ANYTHING on. The induction range is on its own 50 AMP circuit that is shared by nothing else. When I turn on a stove driver \ element the lights in the whole unit dim for a second. The lights don't dim and stay dim. The lights dim for a split second and then come back up to full brightness. The breaker never trips. Only other thing I have connected is the K-Cup machine but it is not running at the time of the dimming. My range, refrigerator and dishwasher are all on separate breakers. Whenever I turn on something big the lights dim for a second and come back up immediately. Any hints on whats going on. Lazy Electrons maybe?! Should I be worried?!

One thing you missed is that if it's due to kitchen countertop equipment the person may be in a home that's old enough to not have any of the code required kitchen countertop circuits. One way to help alleviate this issue is to run at least one of the two required 20a countertop circuits to give you somewhere to plug in some of the kitchen equipment thereby providing some relief for the other circuit. If you're doing a major kitchen renovation, just install both required 20a dedicated kitchen countertop circuits and rework the old circuit so that it no longer has kitchen countertop outlets.

The home doesn't have to be that old to not have kitchen circuits that can handle appliances. One kitchen I know of (home built in the early 1990s) had messed up wiring so all the plugs, the under counter lights, and the dishwasher were on one circuit. Stuff was tripping the breaker all the time. I agree that if at all possible run 20A circuits for plugs and a 15A circuit for the dishwasher, even if you aren't doing a full kitchen reno. It will save a lot of frustration.

keep in mind that most 15a breakers will not actually trip until 17a or so. they are variable and not exact.

Breakers do not trip immediately when the limit is exceeded. A 15 A breaker might take 17.5 A indefinitely. If it is twice the rated current it should trip within a minute. You still should not try to take advantage of this and overload. Note the formula applied only on heating devices. With electronics one need to take into consideration the power factor. To be safe, double the current figure for them.

Thanks for your comment. I totally agree that you should never try to take advantage of overloading a breaker just because it doesn't immediately trip. I use heating appliances as an example because those seem to be the ones that cause the most tripping. As I say in many of my videos, if the issue is more complex or you are not comfortable with an electrical investigation or repair, contact a qualified electrician.
