If you read the deep details of when this movie was made, Judd Nelson(Bender) dove so far into this role that he was nearly fired by John Hughes for being an enormous asshole. Both on camera and off, he stayed in character during filming. Even going so far as to torment Molly Ringwald. It was only at the behest of Paul Gleason(Mr. Vernon) that he was kept for the entire movie. Otherwise, we would have had John Cusack as Bender and that wouldn't have been the same, imho. Judd Nelson IS John Bender. And he played that character *_very_* well.

I know that all 5 of these characters are all the literal focus of the story, but the main character of the 5 is John Bender. Ik a lot of people Say Clair is the main character since she is played by Molly Ringwald and was always main girl material, but her character in this was sorta bland, generic, and had higher standards, where Bender is one of the outcast and such, but hes the only one to make something of it and use it as his strength. He doesn't take shit from no one even when he takes shit from someone live Dick Vernon (THE PRINCIPLE) and the fact that out of all the kids in detention, he's the one who is eyed out the most by the principal. He also is the only one who comes from a domestic and unbalanced homelife where everyone else either loves their kid too much or ignores them; I can tell bender's father hits him. So Bender has a shit tone to tackle while remaining strong and distant while learning to find himself in detention. Plus hes the only one to return back to detention

After hearing that the John Bender role was supposedley promised by John Hughes. to John Cusack, Im glad Judd Nelson ended up winning the role. Cusack as good as he was in the movies he did would have been all wrong for the Bender role. Nelson being older and having the menacing look made him the best choice. Cusack after playing the submissive lackey friend to Hall in "Sixteen Candles", you never would have believed his John Bender could intimidate in any way Hall's Brian Johnson character. Judd Nelson did deserve an Oscar for his performance.

@WolverinePete

Thomas Kemer I think he would have appeared to be to young for the role. Brian and Clair were actually high school age but Andrew, Allison and Bender were obviously early to mid twenties playing teens. Sheen would have probably looked like he did in "Red Dawn" at that time. Bender has to be older looking and intimidating and even though a coward has to look like he could stand toe to toe with Andrew or Vernon for that matter. I read that Judd Nelson got the job for his look and intimidation but almost lost the job because alot of his intimidation was too real for Molly Ringwald.
