One Detail that always bothered me about the scene where Jesse cooks in Mexico: When asked how long it takes to get the phenylacetic acid the Mexican-Chemist says "I don't know, several hours at least!" in a super upset voice. Yet... they were planning for Jesse to make his own anyways, so wouldn't they have to wait several hours anyways? And sure, he may have mean't it takes several hours to attain some from somewhere else, but he ALSO said it's super easy to make so if it DIDN'T take long then why wouldn't he just make it for Jesse? So the "several hours at least" line is pretty stupid, since i doubt the character meant it as a hyperbole (since aparrently it DID take several hours during which Jesse had them clean up the lab)
@betterwatchtv
16 күн бұрын
Totally agree! I assumed he meant that it would take that long to make it (I just looked it up and it seems like it might take over 3 hours). And it makes sense that Jesse would be upset having to wait that long!! The guy was just being combative, I guess, since I’m sure he resented having someone come “show him how it’s done,” especially once he took a look at Jesse!

You missed a little detail, in the famous talking pillow family intervention scene walt tells his family that he doesn't want to take 40 pills a day because after he is gone That's how his family will remember him. In Salud, he talks about his dad which I think is very interesting detail that he feels sorry for his dad and does not feel happy remembering him, he uses the same analogy in his life that he does not want to be remembered like he remembers his own dad. Great video again , one of your bests.

One detail I noticed in this episode is that when Gus walks out, he's in a very similar position to Walt shortly before his death. As he walks out, injured by his own design (Walt's machine gun put down the Nazi gang and wounded him in the process; Gus' poison put down the cartel down and poisoned him in the process. Both mortal wounds had Gus not had medical care ready), his right-hand-man is garrotting a morally reprehensible sidekick (Mike garrottes Gaff; Jesse garrottes Todd). Shortly thereafter, he faces down his ultimate enemy (Gus - Don Eladio, killed Max; Walt - Jack Welker, killed Hank), who dies mid sentence. There are so many elements of the two scenes that are very similar, even down to Gus and Walt both placing themselves in the way of direct, mortal danger and both employing plans designed to kill all of their enemies at once. There might be more parallels, or maybe I'm looking into it far too deep.

the jr & walt scene in this episode is an all-time favorite of mine. i absolutely love the detail of how jr's first reaction to his own dad missing his birthday party isn't to be angry, but to call him and ask if he's okay. plus it's one of the extremely rare times we get to see walt's true, unfiltered emotions without him twisting them into a manipulation tactic (barring the gambling cover obviously), and of course the bittersweet resolution of jr preferring walt's vulnerablility to the pseudo-masculine facade he's been putting on up until this point. also fun fact: schraderbrau was also turned into an orange soda in real life! i collect soda bottles and had to grab one for myself, but it was just some pretty standard-tasting orange soda that didn't stand out too much lol. there's also churro and horchata-flavored los pollos hermanos sodas, and a blue heisenberg soda that was really gross and minty for some reason? tasted like drinking toothpaste. you'd think blue raspberry would be the obvious choice but i guess not! English-Spanish translator from LATAM here! You're right about the "paliza" translation. "Beating" is much closer than spank. However, I like the "spank" translation because it carries a connotation of punishment, particularly that delivered from a figure of authority to a child; I think Eladio's real intention here is to remind Gus Fring that he is the boss, and Gus needs to be "disciplined". To be fair, that connotation is not in Eladio's line as Steven Bauer delivered it, but I do think it was the intention implied in the script. I have noticed both in this show and in BCS that the scenes in Spanish aren't very idiomatic - sometimes, they don't sound very natural for native Spanish speakers - I assume that's because the script is first written in English and then the necessary portions are translated into Spanish.

This has been repeated to death, but I always love the detail in crawl space where the ending mirrors how Walt really dies, with the camera being shaky and a soundtrack that distorts itself to a shrieking like sound, and in Walt's death, he dies in a much more stable and still position on the ground, in a place where he truly wanted to be, and it was only until he truly died where the camera fixes itself, almost as if his life could only truly be stabilized once he dies, and he needs to fix things first before he gets there, and a much clearer soundtrack with Bad finger's baby blue, instead of the impending doom sounding soundtrack that plays in Crawl Space. I hate that people still think that its the death or the moment walt becomes heisenberg, even though it isn't and he was always just a monster ready to awaken, BUT THATS BESIDES THE POINT.

@@betterwatchtv This is like far down the line but someone pointed out what I've been questionning the whole time that everyone wearing some shade of green in the s4 finale, Face Off, are all people who will be targetted or harmed by Walt in the episode, like Rebecca Simons, Hector, and Saul and more, which is the reason why Walt wears Green by the end, heck even the poison given to Brock was a plant, which is usually symbolized by the color green, although the lily's main thing is the white part but still. Usually Green is the symbol of money greed and wealth, but it doesn't make sense with everyone else, but it makes sense if it ties everyone to walt's final plan to kill Gus. As it is largely motivated by, him and his family's safety, and wanting to overtake Gus' business. Which still technically aligns with the meaning of green in the show.

About the bottle of Zafiro, I assume that it was pretty common and modestly priced in 2002-2004. By the time this episode took place, the bottle became more expensive and hard to get, probably reaching "Collectors Item" status.

I’d argue BCS kind of ruins the whole “impossible” thing because they buy/drink/try to buy it like 4 or 5 times throughout that series and they’re just normal people, it’s on the menu at a hotel bar and it’s (admittedly the “last one”) in presumably the first liquor store he went to, it doesn’t seem hard to attain at all. especially not for someone of Eladio or Gus’s status/wealth. it would have made much more sense to be like a $20,000 bottle that you had to “hunt down” to get, but canonically it’s just a thing the everyday guy could buy with little trouble
@betterwatchtv

@@betterwatchtv yeah I considered the “harder in Mexico” thing but then I thought “but these guys smuggle thousand of pounds of drugs over the border every year” so it wouldn’t be difficult at all for Eladio to have someone smuggle it in for him if it was illegal or hard to get in Mexico

@@betterwatchtv judging by Eladio’s reaction, this bottle was supposed to be a collector’s piece. Let’s say, $10000-20000 for a bottle. This is the figure and the rarity that would make a cartel boss so enthusiastic. The writers and directors of BCS had been trying to put as much references, lore expansions and familiar characters/plot devices into the show as possible. For a person, who watches BCS before BB, some scenes can look weird because of it. For example, imagine watching the first episode of BCS and seeing hands snatching Jimmy into the house. And only then the shot when Tuco, who peeks outside, watching for other people, follows. This is where cheering and excitement from people who’d watched BB was supposed to be. It’s a reveal. But for people who had no prior knowledge of Tuco, this scene makes no sense. We as the audience follow Jimmy and his perception, so Tuco’s face and stature being hidden away from us in the first shot makes absolutely no sense cinematographically. BCS is an outstanding show, but it is guilty of fan pondering, and it sometimes compromises common sense to insert as many references and crossovers as possible. To get a sort of MCU fan reaction, where they see a familiar face or a prop: OUUUUUUGH. So, they felt they needed to put Zafiro into an episode, but it costing so much didn’t make sense in that establishment, so they made it reasonably pricey. They compromised. They couldn’t write Jimmy and Kim into a better establishment, and $10000 fraud would make Ken find them and press charges, or at least try to get his money back. The plot demanded that Ken should be able to pay for it and don’t cause a scene. And the fan pondering demanded that it must have been Zafiro, not another, genetic tequila. Of course, they can claim it had gone out of production since then and that’s why Eladio was so surprised. But I’ve seen them compromising a lot to insert as many fan service as possible. They put Zafiro Añejo in BCS so we’d do the :o soyjak faces and point fingers at the screen. Nothing more, nothing less. Without this aspect, BCS would have been perfect.
