The strangest thing about this show is that Walter never tried to build an Empire. Despite all his money, he never tried to pay off police or politicians. Yet, he always pretended in his own mind that he was very powerful. His power was limited to his skill as a manufacturer.
@pixelpatter01

Buying political power is the line the writer did not want to cross. No need to wake up the rubes and cause problems. It's pretty obvious most ongoing crimes involving money could not happen unless politicians, prosecutors and law enforcement look the other way. What’s heart breaking is that to me, I could see this being how Walt met Skylar. 😢 I remember in season 1, the episode “Cancer Man” (I think), Walt told his family that he met Skylar at a bar or a coffeehouse or somewhere he would go everyday after work at Greymatter, and he would talk to Skylar who was work there as a waitress or hostess or whatever. The conversation probably got started a simple way to this. He was off duty, having a drink and some food while contemplating on his next move at the company. A beautiful lady behind the counter caught his attention and the rest is history. Here over two decades later Walt finds himself in a similar situation mirroring his past. Only now he’s an old man At death’s door. A wanted man at that. Yet here he is almost back at square one, metaphorically. Some things never change.

The arms dealer only asking Walter for his word he won't bring it across the Border and then leaving after with just a "well... good luck, I guess" is perfectly done with the somber tone he speaks in while he's clearly quite anxious as he adjusts and fidgets his body while talking. He already met with Walter once when Walter went to purchase a weapon for "self-defense" and certainly knows about what Walter has done to rise to control over a portion of the drug world, so seeing him so changed now into this depressed, disheveled mess of a person while knowing what he was capable of is highly worrisome when he wants to now purchase a fucking light machine gun that he only plans to use where it "won't leave town." He knows some real fucking shit is about to go down and that whatever is happening is related to why Walter is a mental wreck, only feeling sorry for him and hoping Walter makes it out okay. The arms dealer even with the small amount of time he's shown up on screen has quite good characterization across both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Genuinely one of my more liked characters.

There's this concept in screenwriting called "Chekhov's gun" where a character places a loaded gun in full view of the audience (and only the audience) in act I, then they have to wait in anticipation for the gun to be used in act III. Breaking bad does this all the time: Ricin behind an outlet, Walt buying a gun in s4, the cousins getting a free hollow point in s3. It's a narrative device used to help build anticipation.
@otherbrother3

@Yodah97

That is a possible route, but there is such a thing as too much mystery. When Walt arrives at the meeting, there is tension over where he'll park the car, whether or not he'll be able to get his keys back after the Nazis take it, what will happen to Jesse, etc, etc. We can EITHER have that or have the device in the trunk be a mystery. Hiding both would've been too much. You don't want your audience juggling too much uncertainty, there's more tension when they know part of the puzzle. When they have some pieces, but no idea how they fit. And as others pointed out, with how ridiculous the gun set up was, the only way ground it was to show Walter building and testing the rig. It was either that or having him monologue an explanation after the fact, and that wouldn't have been great.

Some people who like metaphysics and spiritual world often say people are destined to die in dates around their birthdays. Gilligan and Gould probably even took that under consideration whilst setting up Walt's death. Well that's being thorough

Watch up to the end of Episode 2. If you're not hooked by then, it's probably not going to happen later. But it is a great little show. Season 1 gets a little rough after that, but it's a short season, and the show is fire from S2e01 all the way to the end.

Oh yeah, Walter paid people to place fake calls to the cops saying that they spotted him all over town, remember? So even if someone did recognize him, there was no way to tell which call was real. Plus, Walt looks way too different. If I had only seen Season 1 of Breaking Bad, I wouldn't recognize Brian Cranston if he showed up at my local diner looking like that.
@EBTwitts

It'd been months since he was actually seen in the area, he'd been hiding out in Colorado if I remember right. The entire time he was gone, he'd been dying of cancer and doing chemotherapy which wreaks havoc on the body. On top of that he'd grown out his hair and facial hair a bit. The main thing, though, was that people weren't looking at him to find Walter White. He wasn't doing anything to really stand out from other people, so people didn't spend much time looking at him. That's how a lot of people can blend in in plain sight when they don't want to be found.
