When it comes to broadband access in Indian Country, there is a bit of a circular problem:
Tribal nations need funding to build broadband infrastructure ➡️ The federal government and philanthropic sector offer funding ➡️ Tribal nations cannot submit the necessary paperwork to access this funding because they don’t have broadband ➡️ Rinse and repeat
Broadband access is just one of the many systemic barriers Tribes face when trying to secure the funding and resources necessary to grow thriving, sovereign economies. In our latest broadcast, “Member Education Sessions: Economic Development in Indian Country”, U.S. Treasurer and honored guest speaker, Chief Lynn Malerba (Mohegan) shares how her team in the U.S. Department of the Treasury is working with other federal agencies to understand and eliminate these barriers.
“We want Tribes to take advantage of these projects and the funding that’s available through different agencies. You think about the Department of Energy, or the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or the Treasury through the monetized tax credits-being able to navigate those kinds of relationships and understand how to plan that project in a way that it will be successful and get across the finish line with the maximum amount of funding provided through the agencies as well as the maximum amount of tax credits that these Tribes can obtain will immeasurably make a difference on those Tribal communities.” - Chief Lynn Malerba (Mohegan), Treasurer, U.S. Department of the Treasury
