Even G. Panerai never had in house watch movements. Some first Panerai watches were Rolex cases with cortebert 618 movements. Can anyone find a movement that was made by Panerai whilst the Panerai family sold watches?Until others took over there were always movements from cortebert ,Angelus ,Unitas, and even an eta 2801 with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module inside Panerai watches (pre vendome).Panerai don’t need to be in-house movements as their history was not one of movement manufacture. The non in-house movements made the name and the watch so in-house is unnecessary to the history of Panerai as it is to Rolex who historically used aegler and cortebert and other movements in their watches until they bought the watch movement manufacturer themselves!

As a former paneristi, having owned panerais since the mid 2000s, they lost their way. So much in fact the group called The Paneristi, who even got special limited editions named after them released by Panerai, ceased to exist and just NOW recently come back online. I’m now a Panerai owner again. But mostly the older ETA based models. They cheapened their line by adding gimmicky “plastic” watches and weird cheap materials. I was recently at my local boutique and handled a $18k chrono that was made by 3D printed titanium blasting and a “carbotech” bezel. It felt like a $35 Chinese watch. However making the move back to screw in lug bars and case backs was essential. When they downgraded their entry hand wind models to snap on backs and spring bars, and deleted the extra strap from the box set I was out.

You miss the point Jory - very few of the people buying Panerai (or Hublot) are making the purchase based on the criteria us watch enthusiasts consider as important. They are more concerned with having something on their wrist that denotes perceived status and their place in the club. If you could make a watch from "unobtainium" and put a basic movement in it, then as long as it is perceived as being a luxury item only worn by a certain class, you will sell as many as you need to at a high price to make a nice fat margin. Insert P.T. Barnum quote here to describe the watch owners who fall prey to the advertising/branding hype.

That's a reason why some independant watchmakers like Philippe Dufour said that to be recognized for your work, skills and knowledge, you have to get out of this whole world. Panerai: BUSTED! The only way to make that movement in-house would have been to buy the entire Swatch Group to get a hold of ETA. They must really think we are totally stupid, while whoever made that decision was not clever enough to hide that movement behind a solid case back and have the movement number removed by an "in-house" grinding machine. WTF Panerai? Now, what could be their next move? Right. Buy the factory that produces those top-notch fakes. This would reduce their productions costs in no time. And if they already lie about their so-called in-house movements, who cares about the label SWISS MADE. Just rename the Chinese town where that factory is "SWISS". Problem solved. It would have been totally Ok if they would have been honest about the ETA movement. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an ETA. Those are workhorses made to perform in tool watches. Maybe not the 2892 with Depraz module. Give me ONE reason to buy a Panerai! I'd rather buy a 6000.- Seiko which is ACTUALLY completely in-house made, than any PAN. Breitling would say their Datora is “manufacture” but it is bought from another company that reworks a Valjoux with a module (Breitling boutique staff do know that and don’t hide it though). I think the Swiss understanding of in-house is quite different than ours given all the contracts and connections between manufactures and personally I’d rather have a caliber that works than a new original one that doesn’t (like some of Kenissi’s actually). God help us if Panerai goes bankrupt and gets bought by Filipo Loretti. I mean, a Lithuanian claiming to be Italian and an actual Italian watchmaker doing all manner of shady stuff kinda go together. It’d be the ultimate Italian watchmaking deception.

Panerai have the same attitude as Seiko. They know people will still buy their products so it doesn't matter if they have QC issues or tell a fib or two. The way this is sorted out is people stop buying their products until they improve or acknowledge their problems and start doing something about them.

To pay more than 3k on a Panerai is ridiculous. The out of the ordinary shape hype is over.

Your videos are great! They helped dissuade me from a recent potential purchase. I was going to buy a PAM177 off eBay. It was in mint condition but w/o box or papers. The asking price was $5k but I bid $3,300 and the seller accepted. But even at that very good price, I decided to cancel: I'm not buying a watch with the stupid OP XI movement. A military watch that doesn't hack?? And has a glass back showing you a marginally attractive movement? Nah. Maybe I'll buy a $300 knockoff (some of the Panerai replicas are insanely good, partially because the factory doesn't provide Rolex-like Easter eggs to easily distinguish fakes!), get a real OEM strap and call it a day. Panerai has lost its way. The Due line is downright embarrassing. The Brooklyn Bridge model was more than embarrassing ... that was a full-on scam. What used to be ever so cool is now bordering on cringeworthy.

Not sure why Panerai has to make a false statement in the beginning regarding the P9200. I don't think people would think less of the watch brand if they just admit to fitting an ETA calibre into their watch. One take-away from the watch world I have learned is *don't claim to be something that you're not* .

Well you're paying over 6k for a watch that has an ETA movement... I'm sure a lot of people have a problem with that.

@@noka5730 I agree it is ridiculous to charge a premium for a watch with bought in movements. However, on the other hand, some watch companies actually put in work in modifying the bought in movements like adjustments and decorations. Furthermore, aside from the movements, there are other parts of the watch such as design, and materials used, can also hold up value. But, everything mentioned above is case by case basis.

I'm sure some Italian lawyer has covered the small print so that in house means something else completely. It's really disappointing that the more you get into watches, the more you find out that some watchmakers and the journalists on their payroll are taking customers for idiots.

I think it's good that consumers push back with regards to the movement. Panerai just needs to be honest and say it's based on a ETA base caliber but modified in house. Most manufacturers are guilty of this and hope the less educated watch consumer will just see the 'in house' and be fumbling at their cash to buy at whatever cost. Slowly but surely the consumer will change the way watches are advertised.

Why are ETA movements seen as a bad thing especially in this panerai chrono p9200 goldtech chrono? Or is it too expensive for someone to buy it?

Reminds me of some whiskey / bourbon bottlers who hide the fact their juice comes from large distillers who sell the product and is not "their" produced whiskey.

What I find really sad about all that has been said, however, is the fact that Jaeger LeCoultre also belongs to Richmont. Panerai doesn't count for me at all anymore. Ever since the Richmont acquisition began, Panerai has been just a name to me, nothing more. Now, of course, one could say that Mr. Panerai himself actually never made his own movements. From that point of view, I could at least find the watches good because of their case shape. But certainly not at these prices, because actually everything is not really refined or specially designed. I would say I pay 90% for the name and the shape of the case.

Isn't this kind of "in house" definition really common among swiss watch brands? Oris withtheir barely customized eta/sellita movements with repainted rotors, bremont with all that they've done... And the tag as you mentioned.

No, that's more like the "Swiss Made" label which refers to a specific proportion of the components having been made in Switzerland. What Panerai did here is worse: they've straight up claimed an ETA part is something _they_ manufacture.

Don't forget that Panerai did change their in-house P9010 movement after summer 2020. Pre summer 2020 P9010 have a hacking movement and post summer 2020 they changed it to non-hacking and still kept the P9010 name for the movement. All this without informing us, the customers. The finish on the "new" P9010 movement is also much worse than before! I was lucky to buy my PAM1314 which have the hacking movement. The new ones doesn't have it. I love Panerai, but this is something that make me look elsewhere.

Panerai was better off going with a 2892 with a module than an in house movement because all the in house stuff they've released over the last few years has been dog sh**. The 6497 replacement p.6000 is a turd in the punchbowl of life.
