Brilliant example of how the score can describe to the audience how the character is feeling, and what their drive is. One of my favorites. Love these videos, keep them coming!

And the thing is, it doesn't just go back and forth between the "I'm gonna kill everyone" and "Johanna my little girl :((" themes - when you add the lyrics throughout the song, those two clearly start to merge into just pure flaming rage and vengeance and it's just so brilliant

I went to see this show last month, really great performance. I had a seat in the second row right in the middle. During this song Sweeney was making so much eye contact with me and then he literally pointed to me with his razor like four times. I was throughly SHOOK. It was terrifying because he was so in character, but then after I was smiling like an idiot. Great time.

Just out of curiosity, where did you see it? Judging by the date of the comment it sounds like you saw it in October, which was when I was in a production of Sweeney.

Why does he say "I'm alive at last, and I'm full of joy?" Is he saying this a bit sarcastically, because he is definitely not full of life and joy.

@Michael Thomas Walton This is my interpretation as well. "Epiphany" is Sweeney having a complete mental breakdown at his chance for revenge being snatched literally from under his nose. He comes to the conclusion that everyone and everything is shit and everyone either deserves death or will find it a relief from their misery, so he resolves to destroy the world in his own way.

I'm very late but my interpretation when he says he's "alive" I think means he's finally awakened and he's going crazy. "Full of joy" is probably him being full of motivation to kill. (My interpretation)

Johanna`s theme also plays after he kills Lucy and before that we hear the begar woman`s theme play over Sweeney`s theme and them at the end when he realised he killed lucy, we hear beggar women's theme and Johanna`s theme played by the violins bout stretched out. It's a great show, awesome music and lyrics ,a masterpiece❤

Ironically, Green Finch is the one place I _didn’t_ realize the Johanna theme was in! It’s in the prelude, it’s part of Beggar Woman’s “ALMSSS ALMSSS” tune, it kind of sounds like Pirelli sings it in The Contest (“to make-a da briiiistle clean like a whiiiistle”), and Lovett’s big love confession during the final sequence!

Kevin, actually the "never see Johanna" and "Lucy lies in ashes" is the Beggar Woman's theme "alms, alms," not Green Finch (same descending chromatic business).
