It wasn't ESPN. It was the B1G. They have already destroyed the Pac 12 and are now working on the ACC. Remember that agreement they had with the Pac 12 as they were negotiating with USC and others to leave for the B1G. Now they are arrogantly talking about who they are "GOING TO TAKE" out of the ACC. They will help all of the non AAU members get accredited. They are a joke...People who live in the South actually do wear shoes. They are in for a rude awakening when the dust finally settles on this. They were actually the Big 2...now with the addition of USC they are now the Big 3. I hope the ACC survives even though I'm a SEC fan.
@mark8337

Not really. The changes are being driven by the law, court cases, the NCAA not having an antitrust exemption, and, then the viewers (ratings) on media outlets. Media deals are based upon viewership and brands. The players must get paid due to court cases. The players must have the right to transfer per same. The scope is national and only regional in the sense of where the schools that have the most viewers are. Most viewers are in the Big Ten and SEC footprint. That’s why they have the higher paid media deals. That’s why some schools want to join them, if invited. We are heading to a Power 3 with the Big 12 being the weak sister to the Big Ten and SEC due to less viewers and money. Conferences that can’t compete with viewers and therefore money will eventually have a Tier 2 level of conferences and eventually their own playoff, and some may drop big time football all together. It’s not anybody’s fault. It’s the law and the marketplace.

Thanks for the update and opinions of conference realignment for ACC schools. When it comes to Miami, I disagree with your assessment. You and everyone else in the outside world don't understand the Miami metropolitan sports fanbase. You alluded to Miami fans loving the pro sports teams, but missed the mark. What the people in the metro Miami and SF area love is a winner. They will get behind whatever team is winning. There are too many things going on around the city that fans will not waste their time and money with the blind loyalty that you see around the landscape of college football. The Canes fans are there. They are passionate. They are the ultimate consumer. You will not get their money if you don't win. You will in spades if you do win. That's the bottom line. Secondly, I disagree that Miami winds up in the SEC. Miami is an AAU school with a ton of available academic research with it's UM Healthcare. That would be a big coup for the B1G. I just don't see the B1G letting all that academic research slide. I also believe the perception and reality of teams could change after the 2024 season. It depends if FSU and Clemson get out of the conference before the 2024 season ends. I believe Miami is ascending nationally and Clemson is regressing. The 2024 tv viewership should increase dramatically for Miami. I think the tv numbers for Miami will open a lot of eyes if they have the kind of season that results in an ACC title and CFP appearance. That would change the game for Miami and give them leverage for a full share or shorter period leading to a full share in whichever conference they join. If you're paying attention, Miami is quietly making moves and positioning itself with back 2 back top 10 recruiting classes and is set for a 3rd. My understanding is the Miami NIL program is bankrolled by 4 billionaires and fans are joining the Canes Connection NIL collective they started. Miami is also building new facilities on campus. No need for an on campus stadium. Hard Rock hosts CFP games and Super Bowls. It is centrally located for all Canes fans and is one of the best stadiums in the country. The fact that Miami is not vocal against the ACC is irrelevant. It serves no purpose at this point in time and has no benefit for Miami at this time. The Miami administration will play its hand at the appropriate time that maximizes their opportunities.

GT will be in B1G before it's over. This is still all several years down the road, not a chance the courts move on this faster than snail pace. From what I see on the ACC landscape, GT has a good coach and they are getting better recruits. Look for their football stock to bristle to a level if not FSU or Clemson, then at least above the rest and will reap benefits associated with it. Coupled with location amd academics/research, I don't see them getting left out of any B1G extension south.

Your proposal is definitely what the big ten wants, the question is what the SEC wants or if that's good enough for them. Academics to the Big Ten, football powerhouses to the SEC. New states matter less each passing day. If you're telling me the big two conferences and networks are actually working together this seems much more likely than what's presented in the video. Yes, money money money, but only considering TV markets is also off. Louisville is not going to the big 10 for any price.

No, they did not. They robbed college sports for years until court cases were finally heard. The whole system is and has always been flawed. What the court has said is that the NCAA does not get to act like a monopoly. They would/should have had a special exception from Congress to govern football or collective bargain with student athletes. The NCAA is just another corporate entity that must follow corporate laws. The reason the NCAA allowed transfers at any time is because they had to. NIL and freedom of movement must be collectively bargained just like the NFL. The courts have said they don't have the power to regulate things that must be collectively bargained. That's what the B1G and SEC will do with it's new power conference a few years down the road.

While money is still a major factor you can't overlook the social and cultural factors in this type of realignment analysis. Clemson fits the SEC culture much better than Miami, while Miami's international reputation fits what the Big Ten is looking for like a glove. Plus adding both FSU and Miami is still adding a new state for Fox. For NC, if you have to split that state then shifting NC State to the SEC and Duke to Big Ten is the better way. Big Ten values elite academics and Duke would be a massive get for the BTAA. Plus (and here's where you're missing the bigger picture) Duke and Miami would be lures for Notre Dame. Yes, we're all aware of the Domers and their refusal to join a conference but Big Ten legacy programs still haven't given up. Don't ask me why. So I think the breakdown would go like this: SEC - Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech Big Ten - Virginia, Duke, Florida State, Miami (future) - Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame Louisville is not joining the Big Ten. Not a good fit.

B1G will in its FSU & UNC at full shares to get to 20. Of the B1G expands past 20 then I could see Miami, UVA and GT. They will stay at 23 and wait out ND. The SEC if they expand will bring in Clemson, NCSt, BT and Kansas all at a discount. B12 will grab Louisville, Duke, Pitt, SDSU & UConn and focus on dominating BB even more even if they lose Kansas. Wake, BC and Syracuse will work with Calford and SMU to keep the ACC as a P4 conference. They will invite WSU, OSU, USF, Tulane, Memphis, UTSA, AF, CSU, Fresno St and Boise State to make a 16 team conference.

I think that nobody outside of Notre Dame is getting more than half shares till the next deal in 2030. The B1G Presidents set a precedent last year adding Wa/Or at half shares till the next deal. Last thing they would want to do would be to create discord in the conference with unequal revenue to it's newest members. Plus it's safe to assume if that was the case, then all four west coast teams would simply vote no on expansion.

If the (big IF) the current conference commissioners puts more effort behind returning to a status quo yet going to the proposed 70-team super conference the overwhelming appearance of the SEC's and B1G strength over college football--if not all of college sports. "Returning to a status quo yet going to the proposed 70-team super conference" means the status quo would be a reprieve return to allowing for regionalism akin to the traditional conferences of pre-2014 college football world while allowing college football funds to dictate that sport only. Unless they improve markedly this year, there is no value add for them to go to B1G or SEC. Both conferences already have a group of doormats and there just really is no added value for a program that can't fill their stadium regularly. There is also no reason to believe that UM will magically turn it around in a season or two.

The Big XII will end up with more teams out of the ACC than the B1G. I don’t see the B1G adding more than 2 teams and the SEC 4. The Big XII will add a minimum of 4 possibly more. I don’t see Clemson in the B1G. SEC gets Clemson and the B1G FSU. Miami will most likely be the running mate with FSU. Then SEC will take Clemson/NC/NCST and one more. Big XII will have pick of the litter afterwards

I like the VA teams assessment but one minor detail omitted. The legislature handling the conference discussions said it wasn't about keeping VT and UVA in the same conference, but ensuring each school is not left out if the other heads to brighter pasture. This was the key in VT going to the ACC after UVA tried to veto it at first. ACC was destroying the BIG East and the VA legislature stepped in to not have VT get relegated out of the P5/4. So if both have spots in the P2, it works.

There are exactly 2 guys that are talking about this as a certainty… this guy and the blond guy from the Big12. Honestly I don’t care. Not saying it won’t all play out like he says, and Im agnostic when it comes to Duke but man…. I kind of see the SEC as Southern and to me translates to culturally a bunch of red states that frankly have a different value system and way of thinking much different from the north. Duke values academics and has high standards. Duke fits much more into the Ivy league or Big10 than the SEC. Florida State and Miami fit into the SEC not the Big10. Is the Big10 really going to dilute its academic reputation and add these schools. The Big10 will definitely be lesser in my eyes if this happens and Duke will be hugely lesser too. And Louisville eventually to the Big10 is NEVER going to happen. Never never never. We are not going to ever let little brother into the SEC and the Big10 will never let them into the Big10. Louisville fits in well with the land of the misfit toys in the Big12. They can play with their other little brother teams like Cincinnati Houston West Virginia Pittsburgh SMU South Florida Central Florida Tulane and whoever else squeezes between the big boys and the truly little guys.

That's a good point. It's not obvious, but media market $value$ goes beyond actual fan base size. Indeed, it's really about grandpa casually leaving the channel on Fox or ABC or whatever as programming rolls into the next intriguing game (LSU Bama or whatever). B10 Network, SEC network ... now those are FANS tuning in to some obscure channel, like streaming. But that's not what's generating the numbers on the major networks. This guy doesn’t understand what drives the Big 10. They look for big lucrative TV markets and AAU membership. That is why Rutgers and Maryland were brought in. They are both in the biggest TV market in the country. Same with USC and UCLA they are at the heart of the second biggest TV market. Washington and Oregon are both in relatively large TV markets. But in all this the Big 10 has only offered membership to AAU members. So Clemson, FSU, NC State, and Virginia Tech, and any other non-AAU schools will more than likely not be joining the Big 10. Miami, Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, Boston College, Georgia Tech., Berkley, Stanford, and the University of Southern Florida are all AAU. Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Boston College, Stanford, and Berkley also bring in reasonably big TV market with affluent fans.

I don't understand how adding a state, or even a media market, benefits a conference. Syracuse and Pitt added NY and Penn, but neither helped the ACC at all. I usually find your info to be credible, but I think you're way off target on Duke, and in a few of your other opinions. There is NO WAY the Big 12 would take Duke without basketball. That's crazy talk. And the Big 10 will not add NC St, so the SEC can add UNC and, in some form, Duke. What's the appeal? Getting into NC with the 3rd best brand, when the digital age commodity is brand, not state population? Besides, the BOT prefers UNC and NC St in the same conference. If the SEC has to make concessions to get UNC, it will be by adding NC St. The Big 10 won't take that burden from them. Also, no way Louisville ever ends up in the Big 10. It's not a fit culturally or academically.

TJ I respectfully disagree with you. Clemson and FSU will end up in the SEC. They are not AAU certified which is a requirement of the Big 10. UNC, Virginia, Duke, and Miami are all AAU certified and more likely to go to the Big 10. Virginia Tech and Nort1Carolina State fit more in the SEC. No, not until they get off their wallet and really start investing in sports. • Clemson is a much better fit in SEC.
