I don't know about anyone else, but I love watching Thomas go through the entire antenna setup and his explanation. Though I must say he makes it look way easier than it has been for me. Trick must be to find an empty park. I always have spectators to watch me struggle.

I really like that KX1. It seems like the perfect rig for a POTA activation. I enjoyed the setup, activation, teardown, and commentary!

What are the odds? You post a KX1 video today, and I received my KX1 today! Pretty excited to get out and activate with it. It's a 4 bander with the ATU and KXPD1 paddles. I've wanted one for a long time, and finally snagged one!

I’m new to CW and your videos are really helpful to me. But, I wish you published another abbreviated video along with the full length one. I’m sure that would take a lot more of your time though. There are just times that I don’t have the time to watch the full length version. Thanks for helping to further my cw and portable knowledge.

Thank you so much. Yes, I would love to do this, but frankly, I just don't have the time. What I try to do to make it easier for folks who want to skip through, is I add chapters in the timeline. Just hover your mouse over it and you can go directly to the parts that might interest you the most. Thank you again!

I really wish elecraft would start selling the kits again. Luckily the QMX seems to cover the same things that the KX1 did, so I have that.

Here's how to get your EFHW antenna (cut for 40 m) on 30 m quickly. (1) Lower the far end. (2) Double back the far end onto itself so as to make the effective length 70% as long as it had been, twisting the wire around itself just a few times as you go. Err in the direction of making it too short rather than too long. Eyeballing it is good enough. The reason you want to err, if at all, on the short side is that the doubled-over section may give a bit of capacitive end loading. (3) Raise it back up again. This should only take a minute or so to do, and the whole procedure can be quickly reversed if you want to go back to 40 m or 20 m. Shortened, you've got close enough to a half wave on 30 m that even your KX1's tuner should be able to take up the slack. Alternatively, and a lot more work, you could add a jumpered insulator at the appropriate point. You'd still have to lower the antenna to change bands, but once you got it right you shouldn't need a tuner at all. David VE7EZM and AF7BZ

Great idea. I'm actually thinking about making a linked EFHW with a link for 30M.

Of my small collection, the KX1 is my favorite radio by far. I have used it much, much more than the KX3, which sits in the shack, mostly collecting dust. I built the original kit and ATU, but had someone install the 30/80M board for me, and he expertly calibrated all of the settings I had fumbled through with a dummy load and multimeter (he also said my soldering was superb, which was a great relief to me). Unfortunately, because I am concerned about damaging it, it has now become my shack radio (I don't have three KX1s like Thomas). I field the Venus SW-3B, which is a great radio to me, and if I break it, I would just order another and not worry about it. I think I am going to splurge a bit on the full TR-45L next with the built-in battery and ATU. We'll see.

Checking out the schematic in the KX1 manual, it looks like the receive bandwidth control is accomplished with voltage variable capacitors in the crystal IF filter network, rather than a switched capacitor audio filter (SCAF) in the audio chain. Pretty neat design, actually.

Those paddles look great, Thomas. How do you rate them? Better than the Pico Paddles?

I love them. To be honest, I love the SP4s and Picos for different reasons. I prefer the action and feel of the SP4s. The Picos are great because they're insanely tiny.
