Sometimes rules are broken for artistic expression not always because someone doesn't know what they're doing. I for one am constantly breaking the "rules" and some of my favorite photos don't follow these guidelines. who cares, do what you want!

Discovered this channel in 2021. Loved it because your style was clearly just that - playing fast and loose with the rules. The end result is always fantastic and for me, a healthy dose of inspiration. Keep on breaking them. Thanks

Rules of photography according to Nikon users: 1: You can only shoot Animals & Street photography in rich white areas (unless its Africa then everything has to be in the dirt). 2: You must wear khaki shorts when taking pictures of animals. 3: You must gatekeep everyone under 40 so we can continue hold mediocre skill level monopolies in our area.

Same. It’s funny because my work is more well received than old colleagues work who had been doing it for YEARS and knew more technical stuff about photography while I take photos off of vines or whatever I want to shoot. If that light hitting just right, gotta take the photo.

Rules should be used as a guideline to learn the in's and out's of a field until you have a solid enough grasp of the basics to create what you picture the piece to look like. You can experiment out the gate but having a solid understanding allows the experimentation to yield better results. Rules second purpose in art is to be broken. Rules will inevitably create a very stifling box and the only way to learn and expand not just your own abilities but whats possible in a creative field is to experiment. Without that no artistic field would be what it is. Rules have their place and it's not always to hold you back but to sometimes show you what you can do and what hasn't been done.

I’ve always regarded the “rules” as a baseline. You use them to learn and begin and then you can expand from there. Photography is art and science blended and having some of the knowledge behind things makes getting the shots you want easier.

Clinging to easy art "rules" is a lot like focusing entirely too much on equipment, and the obsession with getting a camera with better specs, or a lens with more sharpness on a test chart. It's something that's easy to do. Creating something, or engaging your emotions, or putting your work out there for critique is difficult, and not everyone can do it. But everyone can memorize a few simple rules like "expose correctly" and "don't center your subject" and "rule of thirds" and so people who aren't good at creating are decide to feel better about their skill level by "critiquing" other people's work with those few rules they've memorized, without ever having to leave the house, approach a model, find a good location, or try to tell a story.
