I hope you're having a great Sunday!
So, let me remind you that if you have an accent, it’s completely normal. Your native language is on autopilot in your body. When you try to pronounce the music or the sounds of French, the autopilot of your native language kicks in. Therefore, you need to learn how to open your ears and gradually understand how French works compared to your native language.
Another important thing to note is that in French, we often pronounce words differently than how they are written. You see one thing, but you hear something else. It’s essential to understand this well. So, you need to develop attentive listening.
Okay, today, I suggest we practice a few simple sentences. Imagine someone is thanking you for a service you’ve just provided. They say, “Oh, thank you, thank you so much, thank you for your help.”
Today, we’re going to repeat small fragments of sentences that we can use to respond to these expressions of gratitude. Two syllables-listen carefully. In French, it’s important to manage your breath well. We speak on the breath, and you repeat after me. Let's go, two syllables: “De rien, de rien.” Take your time, “De rien, de rien.” Even if I say “de rien” several times, I’m saying it while singing. In French, there’s a little song hidden behind each word. Let’s go: “De rien, de rien, de rien, de rien.” “C’est rien, c’est rien, c’est rien.” “Oh, thank you very much!” “C’est rien, oh thank you.” “Thank you,” “De rien, de rien.”
Let's continue with three syllables: “C’était rien, c’était rien, c’est normal, c’est normal.” “Oh, thank you very much!” “C’était rien, c’est normal.” Three syllables. We’re going to pronounce this in familiar French: “Pas de souci, pas de problème,” but like this: “Pas de problème, pas de souci.” Let's go, “Pas de souci,” very gently, with the breath: “Pas de souci, pas de souci, pas de problème, pas de problème.” “Thank you!” “Pas de problème,” “Oh, thank you!” “Pas de souci.” Let’s continue.
Now, in more formal or standard French, we’ll say: “Je vous en prie.” “Je vous en prie.” We’ll connect everything, “Je vous en prie,” lots of breath. “Je vous en prie, je vous en prie.” “Thank you very much!” “Je vous en prie, sir.” “Thank you very much!” “Je vous en prie, madam.”
Let’s continue: “Il n’y a pas de quoi.” That’s six syllables, but we don’t pronounce it like that. “Y a pas de quoi, y a pas de quoi.” Three syllables, “Y a pas de quoi.” “Thank you!” “Il n’y a pas de quoi.” “Oh, thank you.” “Y a pas de quoi.” Sing it: “Y a pas de quoi.” “Y a pas de quoi.” Don’t forget, behind every French word, there’s a little song hidden.
