Hello! I'm a voice teacher. I studied five years at the academy of music to become one, and I have been teaching as my full time job for 12 years. Most of the time when "voice teachers" do masterclasses online they explain poorly, inaccurate or generalize a lot. As a masterclass on singing this is VERY good and well explained. And I totally agree, when you want to get further, find yourself a teacher, IRL or online. And make sure to find a well educated teacher, preferably with a degree and one with a couple of years experience, and one who is familiar with the musical style you are interested in. Remember, a good singer isn't always a good teacher. It might be true in the case of Floor, but it's not true with everyone else. Internet is flooded with "voice teachers" who doesn't really know their trade. Choose carefully. Once again, Floors videos are VERY good, she knows her shit. She's not only a fabulous singer, she is also a good teacher.

The diversity of this channel has been impressive as hell. There's been everything from live streams to Q&As, to stories about Floor's life, to interviews with other artists, to cover videos, to vocal masterclasses, etc. I've always thought that Floor was a multi-tasker anyway because someone on her level kind of can't "not" be that way, but she's been really pulling out all the stops here. You're a treasure to the metal world, ma'am. Thank you for doing this.

As a yogi, yoga teacher and breathwork geek I am so glad to see you bringing attention to all those other breathing areas of the body apart from the upper lungs. More than one vocal coach reacting to NW vids has noticed that your shoulders don't lift on the inhale. Thanks in part to years of practice long before I kew what I was doing, and my training in yoga as a yoga teaher I pretty much have the breathing part down - I can basically mirror the breathing in songs like Wachen GSL, which I know best - now to work on my *drowning tone-deaf crow* vocals ;-) Hari Om

@Floor I just watched this video and the storytime with horses. I enjoyd both very much. Something popped up in my mind when hearing you talk about breathing and posture. Especially the pulling up of the hair and controlling outgoing air. It reminds me of Centered Riding. A way of riding where the focus is on bodyposture and seat of the rider. It seems there are a lot of simmilar theories between singing and riding. If you haven't already, this might be a fun thing for you to look into. It at least sparked my old dream of organizing a workshop week with singing, dancing, riding and crafting. Thank you!

This has been awesome! I’m 41 years old and had grown up studying classical voice. But nearly a decade ago I began to develop thyroid cancer that wouldn’t be caught until two years after it began to grow and by that point it had paralyzed part of my vocal cord (I’m sorry I don’t remember the technical terms for the folds that move together that make the sound anyway the right fold had been paralyzed.) By this time I had not been singing in a choir for four years, the longest I’d ever been away from the stage and working with my voice, at the time. After learning that I had been told it would be better if I didn’t do any kind of singing if I ever wanted to have the ability for a while, from that point until a little while after the surgery, if I ever wanted to sing again. Come to find out the reason for the paralyzation was because the cancer had wrapped completely around the nerve that made that side of my vocal fold move. They were survived I was still able to sing as well as I did and put it down to the years of training. My main problem at that time was constantly having to clear my throat. So if anyone is reading this and you are a healthy singer (as in you use proper techniques to support your voice so you don’t cause your voice to strain on a regular basis) and start to experience having to clear your throat, or cough, or swallow to soothe your throat as it suddenly becomes itchy or tickles when you sing. Go see a doctor. Thyroid cancer doesn’t follow trends in age, sex or any of those common thoughts about cancer. It can happen just as easily to a teenager as it can to a first time mother as it can to a struggling artist right out of college, to the soldiers servicing on the frontlines, to our grandparents. So it’s important to not think it can’t happen to you if you feel something’s wrong with how your voice is acting. Trust me you do not want to be in the shoes I’m in now. I’m here watching this because, even though I had the best surgeon in The Mayo Clinic for the type of case of thyroid cancer I had, it was still wrapped around and squeezing the nerve that controlled part of my vocal fold. Afterwards, when they explained was causing the paralysis and how extensive the restrictions was, the doctors warned me straight away that I might never get the control needed to sing professionally again, but they did assure me that there was no danger of not regaining the full use of my speaking voice. That surgery was 8 years ago and I have just this year regained half the vocal range and control I once had. But what I found so useful in this video was that it showed me a lot of what I was skipping over because I was “past” it in my head. But when I worked with the video I realized that there was I lot of the basics I was really ignoring because I just wanted to get back to where I was that I am ignoring literally decades of vocal training. So thank you, Floor, for reminding me that I should not try to run before I can crawl.

I am curious... At the end of the video, Floor talked about sometimes some reprogramming needs to be done if you have developed a 'not optimal' technique. So @FloorJansen, what is something you had to reprogram yourself over the years? Really nice masterclasses, you take the time to really explain the basic fundamentals that every beginner should master, instead of just trying to sing without any control. It is an excellent reminder that singing is not "just a talent" but a skill that requires effort , hard work (and sometimes boring exercises on repeat) to really hone that skill.

Thank you for this second online class Floor, it is always helpful to be reminded of support and breathing techniques. I'll practice these exercises and see what happens. Also, having chronic back pain, it might help a little to activate a few other muscles to work on the overall posture. About belting while clear singing and opera singing, do you lift your soft palate everytime to get more space inside the mouth? I find it quite difficult to actually "feel" it. It would be nice to have your feedback! Now, practice time!
