How to breed African cichlids in our aquarium? African Cichlids ost Lake Malawi cichlids are mouthbrooders, which means that the females will carry the fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths until they are free-swimming. This is different from other types of fish that lay their eggs in a nest or on a substrate.
If you are new to African cichlids fish keeping my personal preference is to use a Glass aquarium to observe female cichlids that are holding eggs in their mouth that is a good approach for breeding African cichlids, especially if you are new to keeping these fish. Observing the females for signs of holding eggs in their mouth is a key step in breeding African cichlids. By isolating the female to a separate holding tank, you can prevent the male from bullying her and causing her to spit out the eggs.
A glass aquarium can be a good option for observing the females as it allows for clear visibility and easy access for monitoring and caring for the fish. In the holding tank, you should provide the same water parameters as the main tank, and make sure the tank is big enough for the female to comfortably hold and care for the eggs/fry in her mouth.
It's also important to keep an eye on the female's behavior and physical condition, as holding eggs for an extended period can be taxing on her. Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be moved to a separate tank or reintegrated into the main tank.
Female African cichlids typically hold their fry in their mouths for anywhere from 21 to 28 days, depending on the species and the specific breeding conditions. The fry will be free-swimming by the time the female spits them out, and they will be able to fend for themselves.
Once the fry are free-swimming, it is safe to remove the female from the holding tank. You can move her back to the main tank or to a separate tank if you wish to keep her separate from the fry. It's important to monitor the fry for any signs of illness or stress, and provide them with appropriate food and care.
It's also important to note that the fry may not be ready to eat the same food as the adult fish, so you may need to provide them with smaller food such as baby brine shrimp or crushed flakes. As the fry grow, you can gradually introduce them to larger food.
Keep in mind that breeding African cichlids can be challenging, and not all fish will successfully breed in captivity. But, with patience and proper care, it can be a rewarding experience.
