I know I'm commenting on an old video but a tip for anyone who has gotten in the situation of being stuck with baby fish and don't want to seperate the adult pair (like with cichlids) is sell them as feeders. Both predatory fish keepers, monitor lizard keepers and certain snake keepers (ones keeping fish eating species). It won't make you money but will balance it out so you don't loose money and means you don't need to seperate pairs. I used to breed Convicts, Jack Dempseys, Kribs & Bichardi cichlids (plus other easy to breed fish species)when I had my old fish room and larger reptile collection for the purpose of using them as feeders (as goldfish aren't a good fish to use as a stable diet). Excess were sold to other keepers as feeders in frozen bags generally for £10 per bag (ranging from 5-20 fish depending on the size of the fish) or for "free" as effectively credit if they were going to breed something I was interested in getting. I had/still have a fancy freezer that goes down to -20c (-4f) for my dog & cat food which if kept in for at least 7 days kills parasites (while I never had major disease issues in my fish so was fine feeding them fresh to my animals it meant if someone else had a parasite issue at some point they couldn't blame me 🤣). Another thing you could do is if you got another tank when you spot baby fry catch them and chuck them in the other tank.... They won't last long from the other fish 🤣

What a great take on the 10 things video! My comment isn't about cichlids or having too much fry it's about something a little different. This is why I've decided to remain just a hobbyist fishkeeper. I'm already experiencing this problem thinking I could support my hobby breeding Guppies..(usually a win-win) I probably could have got money for these Guppies.and I was going to have a great guppy breeding program! "I can get $50 a pair" I thought to myself 🤣 No one told me that the albino strains were so hard to get fry from.. I automatically thought that all Guppies had fry prolifically and would overpopulate. And that is true unless you pick the wrong strain of guppy 🤣 where the problem arises is when The strain I picked are known notorious fry eaters 😁😁 so I'm basically enjoying a $60 trio of Guppies. The daddy guppy will eat them coming right out the mama.. so I separated her. The mother will literally have the baby and back up and swallow it before it even gets away from her body 😢 I've put them in breeder boxes, I put them in heavily planted tanks with Java moss, subwassertang and even hornwort. I mean there's people that obviously breed them.. but that "people" is not me 🤣🤣 so if you want to lose some money pick you out some beautiful fancy Platinum albino whites Guppies 🤣🤣 Happy Halloween guys I hope you have a very blessed day!🙏🌿🐟🌿💚

I bred angels years ago, and i couldn't sell them but i lived way out in the "sticks". Oh yes, i had a lot of angels and several tanks and finally found a breeder to take many. Meanwhile, i do have a question which has absolutely nothing to do with this informative video you just posted and i hope you don't mind. I just started a heavily planted tank about a year ago and it's 75% covered in plants, 1/4" smooth smooth river gravel substrate. I get the message from others that this isn't going to be beneficial to my tank ecosystem. And others say yes it will. I am not even sure how to vac the gravel which is exposed... deeply or surface? I have no dirt or other substrate and maum (spelling) which collected under the gravel layer around the plants and under my rock pile where i have java ferns planted..... I leave the otherwise graveled areas around the established plants alone. I'd like to ask if you and your wife could make a video on this if you have similar tank set-ups.. I'm not sure if i'm over-cleaning the tank or not. I gravel vac the bare areas thoroughly once a week, deeply...... but not sure if i'm over-doing it by deeply vacuuming the gravel like that, or if i ought to just vac the surface area.. Just a request to ask for yet another video on this subject. If you'd consider it, i'd appreciate seeing a video about gravel planted tanks. It just seems like everyone has a different idea about how to clean the graveled tanks -- and many say gravel is a terrible substrate but my plants are doing great. I use Easy Green and every few months root tabs for the rooted plants. All this information has my head spinning. haha... and you're The Professor! bunches of thanks.. I hope i'm not driving you crazy!! Best regards. :) I hope this makes sense?

Right now I have nice delta Black Moscow Guppies. No one wants them either. A couple friends took a few. I have right now about a 100 and will just keep the little ones. To prevent over population, I am thinking of birth control for them. Might get one betta and put in tank so he eats the weak and let the strong survive. Either way, a great fish. As my males get older, they develop a nice powder blue spot in the middle of the tail. Really hard to see, but in the right light, a real cool looking male. That is my hardest fish. But. I enjoy them and the black Moscow delta tails are superb in my book.

🤔All of these species are great to keep in pairs or more if you have something to feed the offspring to. So, when i tried giving away my mbuna hybrids to local fish stores (some with incredibly beautiful colors), i was told by several people that hybrids were too hard to sell and that most people wanted F1 pure strains and not hybrids. One person even told me I was ruining the hobby. I finally was able to give them away, and so glad they all got new homes. I am keeping South American cichlids right now, but my next African cichlid tanks will be single species only with a high male to female population so that 1, I don’t have an all male tank anymore, 2 I will be able to easily give or sell pure strains of species easier. I’m definitely done with the all male haps/ peacocks tank for sure. I still love mbuna though... with that said, what do you think is the mbuna species that is most endangered/ most important to breed and sell or give away?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
3 жыл бұрын
Great questions - I actually know someone who specializes in hybrid strains and they are some of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen! Not saying everyone should run out and start hybridizing their cichlids, but some of the hybrids are amazing looking. As for endangered mbuna - I'm not sure which ones are in worse shape. Usually when endangered species come up it is the Lake Tanganyikan and Lake Victorian species that come to mind. I know many of the Lake Victorian species are on the CARES list - you might start there?
