The Breguet 14 was noteworthy as the first aircraft in mass production to use large amounts of metal -rather than wood-in its structure, allowing the airframe to be lighter than a wooden airframe of the same strength, in turn making the aircraft very fast and agile and able to outrun many fighters of the day.

My grandfather was in the 96th Aero Squadron, America's first bomber unit 1918-1919. They used this aircraft as their primary bomber at that time and operated on a temporary aerodrome known as Amanty Field. Today there is almost no sign that it had been ever used for this and I believe it has reverted to it's original use as a farm. This aircraft in it's original form was very dangerous to fly and they had a high mortality rate, that is a large percentage of fliers never made it back. If I recall correctly, these were originally used just for reconnaissance missions and the first ones used were designated as "photo." These are easy to recognize in any photo as this is the only biplane with a "Rhino horn" mounted above the motor.
