In my early days of social dancing, one of my biggest references and inspirations said: ‘the good dancer is the one that can do nothing really well. Can you do nothing really well?’. I never forgot this and it became one of my guiding principle for training and experiencing partner dancing. How well can I do nothing.
The class was about shifting weight, walking and stopping, and that’s what he was calling ‘nothing’. How well can you do these very foundational movements while enjoying them and giving them the same amount of energy and focus you might give to a more complex looking movement. Over time, I found immense joy in exploring the nothing. I found that it was something I could do with everyone I danced with.
Luckily for me, Minha Velha Brenda Carvalho is also a nothing practitioner heheh I’m so lucky to be going around the world with her sharing this passion for how complex and beautiful simplicity can be; and that the act of finding each other in our walks and weight transfers is an exercise of patience, awareness, and care. In our workshops, we have often said that we have a dream where more people will find that simple is enough, that they are enough, and that to find joy in dancing together is to enjoy dancing together.
