Famed producer/engineer Brendan O'Brien has been known to use Sennheiser MD 421's on the tops of toms with SM57's on the bottoms and connect the two mics for each tom to a single preamp using a Y-cable of which the XLR for the bottom mic was soldered out of phase. I figured I give this a try! Soldered my own cables using Mogami W3106 stereo cable with Neutrik XX Gold connectors. Each Y-cable is about 5ft long.
My conclusion: The effect is not super dramatic but especially on floor toms it's definitely very obvious. The tone of the drum is more saturated, resonant and the low-mids and lows are more present.
Technically, summing two mics to a single signal should never be done using a Y-cable. Different microphones have different impedance characteristics and the impedance load coming from the preamp being pushed into two different mics could cause all kinds of issues. You should definitely never try this using one or two condenser mics. In this particular case, the 421 and the 57 interact in a way that, by pure chance, works out really well. It's hard to tell exactly, but to me it sounds like the blend is about 60/40 top/bottom (maybe 65/35). The 421's are naturally hotter than 57's. So that's the first beautiful happenstance since that is right about how you'd would want to blend them if you recorded the mics on separate tracks. Secondly, the mics somewhat "self-EQ" together into a signal that dips a bit of the nasally mids that a 57 would have by itself, and enhances the lows. Lastly, the bottom mics pick up far less bleed than the top mics. So at roughly a 70/30 blend between top and bottom, this setup definitely decreases the overall cymbal bleed in the tom tracks.
