One of my favourite interpretation of the Sonata The Tempest :) !! Sometimes there is a small lack of emotions in his interpretations, but this one is absolutely perfect :) !!!

The last movement is well haunting. Beethoven loved his Neapolitan Sixths - Lol.

At last my friend Brendel has appeared, thank you for posting this performance. In my opinion from the 1970-ies on he has somehow recreated Beethoven in a way it sounds more Beethoven-like than many other performancers manage to do.

Impecable, no hay una nota fuera de su lugar y tiempo. La perfección y el sentimiento en su más pura escencia.

This is a very musical keyboard performance. Brendel is clearly influenced by the pieces of Mozart and Bach that he has played, those influences (esp Bach Well tempered Klavier) are very present in his Beethoven, very clearly Brendel's Mozart coming through as well. The only negative feature: this slightly robs the complete Beethoven spirit and there a slightly "fugue" quality here. Still skillfull nonetheless.

Does anyone else hear what I can hear, in that the 4/4 rhythm and the 3/4 are superimposed? Or is this a known fact? I'm not a musician, I found this - or rather it found me - by tapping my fingers. It seems to work better with Alfred Brendel than with others. Significant?

Mark harrison If you are talking about the 3rd movement it's in 3/8 time and the rhythm is played in semiquavers. There's no 4/4/ or 3/4

Darius Windarc I stand informed. In fact I'm no more than a superannuated "ear-musician", and I was moving outside my slender brief ; what I mean to say is that in the third movement I can tap my fingers on my desk to a light-and-rapid waltz rhythm and concurrently substitute a rollicking swing rhythm. I hope this explains my limitations. Now I'll have to research the terms "semiquavers" and "3/8" ! Many thanks.

Mark harrison You are actually correct Mark. I assume you are really hearing the 4 bar phrase structure. But there are more interesting rhythmic superimpositions for instance bar 43-47. That's called Hemiola in musical terms. You can't really hear 3/8, because you can only hear the triple beat, so for you it might very well be 3/4.

Art Zegelaar Sincere thanks, Art : gee, a fan at last! Now I'm trying to practice simultaneously tapping out waltz-time with one hand and swing-time with the other. I'll let you know in ten years' time how it's progressing. Another point which intrigues me : all pianists seem to do it, but did Beethoven really mark that last note to be played by a church mouse?

Mark harrison Beautiful isn't it. What's wrong with the pianists trying to feel what it''s like to play a note and not hearing it? Beethoven for real...
