The tip about setting a theme is SO true!! As a forever DM of 9 years, I can confirm that the player's enjoyment will increase tenfold if they are aware of a set theme and can create characters around it! Also, how are your videos not being recommended to more people? This is better content (and editing) than 99% of other D&D channels that I have seen. Anyways, keep up the great work.

100% agree. If i ask someone what a premise is for their game, and it is more than a sentence long of ten words or less, im out. Thats not a yet fully realized idea, thats a rough draft.

ALWAYS incorporate your pcs' backstories into the narrative flow in a non-superficial way. Who they are and what they want should be critical to building to the climax of the campaign. It's very easy to rewrite an unaffiliated npc into one that has some connection to your player(s) and can set up extra tensions and mysteries. Social encounters and combats can always be shifted to places that are more relevant - think about how much more important to the pc it would be if the local thugs were harassing a family member/friend rather than some random tavern owner. If your pcs don't have personal reasons to see a campaign through, then they're just mercenaries.

Some of my players are kind of predictable having played with them for 16 years, but others I never know what they're going to do and it's really hard to plan for them. What has worked for me personally is to write a skeleton outline of my campaign, figure out what I kinda want to happen and then let my players backstories and actions fill in the rest. It makes it so I only need to plan out a session or two in advance and my players always feel satisfied, I'm mostly pulling plot hooks out of my ass and hoping they don't notice when I'm improvising lol.
