It's so weird to compare Bret and Shawn. To me, they are the two best in-ring performers of all time, and yet their styles are so different. I think Bret told a better story, I think his moves looked crisper and more fluid, and the way he took bumps was much more realistic. Bret made everything look more real. Shawn on the other hand, was more athletic, ballsier and a lot quicker and more agile. Shawn worked best with the really big guys, bumping around the ring like a pinball. Bret, on the other hand, worked his best matches with similar sized guys. If you look at their mutual opponents, Shawn had better matches with the bigger guys, and Bret had better matches with the similarly-built guys. I don't know how to call it. Shawn had the longer career, but I think Bret was a better champion. Gun to my head I'd probably say Shawn is objectively better, but I like Bret's work better on a personal level. I value the in-ring technician stuff more. One more thing, I don't buy the idea that Shawn sold better. He was louder and more animated, but Bret actually looked like he just got fucked up. Grabbing his throat, taking the chest-first bump into the turnbuckle. I think Bret sold better than Shawn, by a fair margin.

Bret Hart is out of his mind. His look as a wrestler is ICONIC. Iconic look and swag...

That is not true. Think about it. Bret wins the title in 1992. Drops it in 1993 and they try to make Lex Luger. Who did Vince put the belt back on in 1994? Bret. When he dropped it to Shawn at WM12 and left the company he was negotiating with WCW. Why did Vince bring him back if he wasn't a draw? Who got the belt in 1997? Bret. So the point is, that if Bret wasn't a draw Vince wouldn't have continued to go back to him and put the belt on him time after time. Now I will agree that Bret did not match Vince's vision for the Attitude Era and that had something to do with Vince allowing Bret to leave in 1997. But to say that he wasn't a draw doesn't match up with how Vince does business. If Bret wasn't a draw Vince wouldnt have kept going back to him with the belt multiple times and he wouldn't have brought him back in 1996.
@Cableguy15

Well, in the mid 90's, nobody was drawing in wrestling, really. It had become so stagnant. Is it necessarily Bret Hart's fault when the rest of the roster consists of dentists, hockey players, and giant chickens? I've always felt that way about Nash too. He proved to be a draw when he was surrounded by the right people and wrestling changed. 1994/1995 had to be some of the most boring times in all of wrestling history. Flair and Hart have always said bad things about one another. Imo they are both wrong about each other. Hart was a top heel in 1997 that absolutely did help draw, and Ric Flair's matches were certainly not all the same.
@sleazyfellow

Bret drew about as anyone could in wrestling after the huge scandals of the early 90s. Drew more than flair who was in the WWF in the early 90s, and more than Shawn and diseal in the mid to late 90s in WWF. Was he up there with the really big draws? No, but he wasn't the worst draw ever. I think diseal holds that record.

Bret really helped propel Austin with their matches and feud, and honestly I do think his legacy is nearly unmatched. He carried the fed through their toughest years, and whether or not people want to give him the credit he deserves, he was the best worker during his time at the top of wwe. He also helped elevate Shawn an awful lot, which is something people seemingly never recognize. Shawn was great at high spots and charisma, had impeccable timing and selling, but Bret was tons more believable. His psychology in the ring is unmatched to this day in my opinion, and really could work a good match with just about anybody. Greatest of all time in my opinion... Shawn, Ric, Austin, Taker and Angle are in the conversation as well but Bret has my vote.

People can go on all they want about Bret Hart the wrestler and how 'bitter' he apparently is. But Bret ALWAYS has a human message when he talks, even in the most basic of life lessons. Tragic to hear that him and Smith were diagnosed at the same time but it was too late for Smith. And is he bitter about it? No - he's conveying a positive message to the people listening who may be in the same situation in their lives. And this, is why Bret Hart will always be one of my heroes. Marks who disagree are redundant to this argument.

Brett sold better than Shawn. Had a more realistic in ring style. Shawn had more charisma and more high flying spots. It depends what your cup of tea is. In my opinion Bret is the best in ring worker of all time simply because his matches were the most realistic and when he sold you genuinely believed he was in pain. His punches are as good as they come. You can't help but suspend your belief. His psychology and story telling in the ring far surpasses anyone else as well. I've been watching back a lot of his matches lately on the network and seriously every match is great and he brings something different to every big match he's ever had unlike A lot of the big names from that era. You'll notice that Bret is the only wrestler who think's he's the best there ever was. Very few if any of his peers put him at the very top, even his own family members like Neidhart, Dianna and Davey Boy say that Owen was the best out of all the Harts. Hart was well liked and respected too, Where as, despite being a massive prick to everybody and one of the most hated people in the industry Shawn Michaels is frequently called the best in-ring performer of all time by his peers. Even people who hate HBK with a passion to this day like Jim Cornette admit that he was "the best performer of his era" Shane Douglas even said recently "you can say what you like about Shawn the guy but you can't deny he was one of the best ever" Steve Austin, triple H, Chris Jericho, Ric Flair, Undertaker, Jim Ross, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Vince Mcmahon have all in quotes said that Shawn was the best in ring performer of all time. And honestly that's just to name a few off the top of my head it goes on and on and on. I have seen countless clips of wrestlers who say they like Bret, love him to death but laugh out loud when they bring up" the best there is" tagline like can you believe that motherfucker believed that FOR A SHOOT, oh man his ego is out of control. I say this as a big Brett Hart fan growing up, he had great psychology and he did the basics really well and could tell a great story in 20/30 minute match but he wasn't exactly versatile. He couldn't have an exciting match in 5 minutes and get the crowd to pop with one move or a gesture that was often required in that era where the champ would face the odd job guy. He was the shits on the mic, just no charisma as a baby face although he was pretty good as a heel. He couldn't fly in the ring, he wasn't explosive like Dynamite, Benoit or Angle and he could be a bit selfish in the ring at times. look at his brawls with Steve austin and shawn michaels at Mania 13 and SS97 as examples. He does not sell ONE PUNCH in the back and forth brawling doesn't even snap his head back, look for yourself. Bit too worried about looking strong vs being a giving performer like Michaels. Bret Wrestled one style really even though he told beautiful stories in the ring Shawn could do the same, he could work Brets style look at his match at mania 12 look at his matches with Kurt Angle and Benoit, he could brawl, he could wrestle that crazy memphis style and even make Jeff Jerratt look like a great wrestler. He could be funny and entertaining then he could brawl in a cell match against someone as big as the undertaker and it was believable, then he could fly around and work like Mysterio. Anyway I do like Bret but he's so bitter and critical of everyone else I thought id say it like it is, he was very good but not in the top top bracket. He still bitches about Shawn and Razor "stealing" "his idea" for a ladder match and said that the match wasn't great it was the idea that was great lol. Bret did not invent the ladder match, it wasn't even invented in calgary. I've seen his ladder matches he had in Calgary, the reason they picked Shawn is because he was the better performer. Bret wouldn't have done the things Shawn did with the ladder and took the bumps he did so it would have been a decent match and probably gone down as a one off gimmick match but Shawn revolutionized the business with that match and it was the genesis of the tlc and money in the bank and all that stuff and Brett is just bitter. The whole Montreal thing is all on him too. He should have just done the job. He had a problem with Shawn but it wasn't Shawn's business it was Vince's the guy who took a chance on him when no-one else would have. It wasn't like anyone looked at Bret and said yeah he's got the charisma he's gunna be a world champion one day. Without Vince Bret would be a little footnote in Wrestling. Vince made him a millionaire and a champion the least he could do was help vince's company that made him on the way out. Anyway thats my thoughts.

The thing I didn’t like was how he treated this fan who idolizes him who worshipped him who knew everything about him and Brett just nonchalantly blew him off. That’s why there will only be one Muhammad Ali who loved everyone and treated people who were complete strangers as if they were his family member. It would have been super awesome for Brett to have acknowledge him with maybe a handshake, a hug and a big smile to show that he loves his fan and make them Feel special. Sucks

Rosenberg perpetuating the myth that Hall and Nash were "WWF stars". Sure they became nationally famous as Razor & Diesel, but they became household names once they went back to WCW as Hall & Nash. They each had 20-plus year careers, and only spent 3 & 4 years respectively in the WWF out of that whole time.

I came up in the attitude era but it ruined professional wrestling. There are a lot of similarities with Hip Hop actually,88-99 was the “Golden era” of both imo. By the time the early 2000s came2003 to be exact) Wrestling had become so fictitious and outlandish I couldnt watch it anymore. That happened though because once you have a “Hardcore era” and Divas and tlc matches and hell in the cell,all that was born during the attitude and just like Hip Hop does with a formula,they’re just regurgitating the old stuff.

Alway had respect for Bret Hitman Hart. I hated what Vince did to you. The Screw Job was such a Kick in the balls, to actually realize you had really been Screwed over even after you had talked about dropping the Tittle you just wanted to drop it at a Different time and they went behind your back and Fucked you Over. Thanks for all the Great Matches you Gave us.
