The way I see it is: Does the morph affect the animals quality of life? In the case of scaleless snakes and albinos, seeing as they are only bred in captivity, and can therefore have adjustments made by breeders/ owners to make them comfortable, meaning they have a good quality of life. In animals like pugs and, as mentioned, spider ball pythons, the morph affects their quality of life, and no adjustments can ever really fix it. Regardless of what you do to make the animal more comfortable, it still is unable to do basic things animals should be able to do (Ex. as an autistic person, i am disgusted that people were trying to make some comparison between not breeding a certain morph, and euthanising autistic people. literally wtf??? i think that animals with defects are completely fine when they are bred accidently, but breeding them purposefully to have a defect or something that can greatly affect their enjoyment of life is disgusting. also i got so mad when he mentioned the dog thing because the issue is just as bad with dogs. i had a friend who's sister bought a very expensive "designer" breed of dog, and then dumped it on him because she couldn't take care of it, and the poor thing had major breathing problems, completely fucked legs and was obese because it couldn't be walked for more than 10 minutes because of the breathing problems. i mentioned to a different friend about how inhumane i thought it was to breed that type, and they got mad at me because "not all of them have it that bad". i'm so mad. honestly i'm pretty against selective breeding in general, unless you're selectively breeding with the intent of having the healthiest and happiest animal you can.

For a young man, you are really articulate and your points, most of which I agree with, are very well thought out. I think if a dog was bred that didn't know up from down, people would freak out. Great job! These guys talk ad nauseum about how much they love their animals. Sure, they like reptiles... But I believe it is like anything else. All about the money. Again, great job and take care.

This Usually implies that you cannot abandon the animal either. This particular ban from 2017 (took effect in 2018) banned the selling or collection of Spider Ball Pythons, Jaguar Carpet Pythons and Enigma Leopard Geckos which all have problems. In my book: Any breed should be allowed if: -It is a color -it is a shape -it is a size -it is a color patern or lack of scales As long as the animal is physically and mentally healthy Breeds shouldn't be allowed if: -They have poor motor functions/neurological problems that are KNOWN to be genetic defects -Growths that are harmful from birth that are KNOWN genetic defects -Sizes that can cause harm due to malformation and are KNOWN genetic defects -Any other KNOWN genetic defect If you want to make money, find a morph that is pretty that doesn't have those known genetic defects. If you stumble across a genetic defect, don't breed the creature.. This goes for ALL animals. Hell I would buy a purple german sherpard as long as it was healthy, but not if it has hip problems or any other known, preventable defects... Besides, all reptiles are pretty in their own rights. I even took care of a generic bearded dragon that had lost its front leg and part of its tail but was completely healthy and energetic otherwise. If you go out and buy an animal soley for looks, without any regard for that animal's wellbeing... You got a few screws loose. But that guy.... he doesn't quite look a 100% and I say that with the utmost respect....

All these animals want is to live a long happy and healthy live with their futur family. So why should we allow people to IMPOSE to theses harmless animals an unhealthy live ? Think about it a second. Also I’m sorry for my bad English.

"We should be policing ourselves and the market" WHOOOO I'm a horse person. We have breed registries that are supposed to "police" similar issues in certain breeds. The Arabian horse industry had started seeing a genetic issue that, honestly, was similar to this, where the horses would shiver and lose balance and basically be in a constant seizure like state. The American Arabian registry started to absolutely refuse horses with this disorder, and even rejected horses that carried it and showed no symptoms, and it has been almost eradicated because of it. Meanwhile, in the American Quarter horse Association, a similar disease that seems to effect horses with the stallion "Impressive" in their bloodlines has started to hit. We call it HYPP. Horses randomly has seizure-like shivers, can't walk normally, lose balance, etc... What does the AQHA do? They provide genetic tests to decide if a horse has HYPP or is a carrier. Horses that have it, not accepted. Horses that carry but don't show symptoms... Can still breed... Policing does nothing if the one doing the policing does not care about the animal's wellbeing and only wants profit.

Mira55X - Planet Nalzena I’ve actually seen the method the original video is talking about is the dog breeding community. He says that when they see a baby with severe defects or a wobble, they retire the mom to prevent more with severe defects essentially preventing the traits that cause that to spread.(says that. Don’t know if he applies that) For example: When a dog’s pup ends up with hip dysplasia, the parents and pup are fixed and the parents are essentially retired. That hasn’t stopped hip dysplasia from existing or even decreased it’s occurrence, though. :/ My small mixed pup we adopted from an irresponsible friend has it. It breaks my heart on days he is in too much pain to move.

My first snake was a sider ball python and I got him at a reptile expo for about $75. At the time I was a beginner snake owner just looking for a cheap, docile snake. The breeder I got him from told me he wasa sider morph and that he was a terrific eater and very mobile. He was about 8 weeks old when I got him. He seemed to be very healthy and happy. About 3 weeks later he refused taking meals and began slightly twisting his head. I tried to offer him a pinkie 2 times a week so I was not to stress him out but he never took it. After his wobbles got worse I took him to the vet. Strangly the vet said he had a healthy weight despite not having a meal since before he was mine. The vet knew immediately what was wrong when I told him what the snake was. He encouraged me to force feed the snake which was pretty scary considering I was afraid for his well being but did as I was told. He also told me that most likely if his wobbles remained that it would be best to put the animal down. I cried in his office while he encouraged me to keep making sure Victor was as comfortable as possible. After returning home and force feeding him for a couple weeks he started to take food himself. The wobbles never subsided. A few weeks later I woke up to him passed away in his hide. I miss him everyday he was the sweetest noodle ever. Im planning on going to the expo this year and hoping I will see him. I know he took advantage of me being a beginner snake owner and wanted to make money off me. My heart goes out to those who went thru similar experiences. Please do your research before selecting a snake. I was dumb and made a bad decision in that I did not research but tbh I dont regret it, victor was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

After having a corn snake for a few years I decided to also pick up a ball python, did some research for a few weeks about how to care for them but never saw any mention of this. When I went to get one, they had a few normals and a bumblebee, and it was so beautiful I picked up the bee, but the people in the shop never explained any of the issues that can happen with the different spider morphs. I only found out about it months after I had him when watching a video about different types of morphs. Very very luckily my bee doesn't display a noticeable wobble, or corkscrew or anything and other than being picky sometimes like all BP's, has no issues with feeding, but as much as I love him I wouldn't ever take the risk of buying another with spider genes incase I got one that did suffer from the more extreme issues that have been talked about here.

As far as I'm concerned, saying a Spider morph's wobble is 'cute' is like looking at somebody with downs syndrome and saying the way they can't control their body is adorable. Sickening. Is the morph cute in terms of pattern? Yes, sure, it's a lovely pattern - but it's ABSOLUTELY not worth the price of a disorder that permanently negatively affects their life. Anyone who values aesthetics over HEALTH shouldn't be allowed to own an animal OR breed them imo.

You do have a bit of a point. When I wrote that, I was only thinking of the whole 'neurological disorder' part, and how people find the 'wobble' cute, when it's really not that dissimilar from somebody who can't properly control their own limbs most of the time. I was merely trying to make a comparison to people who don't understand; telling them what they're doing by saying the spider's odd movements are cute. It's absolutely the same as intentionally breeding for those traits in a pug, though, that whole bulging eye and flat face thing that gives them next to no eye sockets that run the very real risk of their eyes popping out, and a nonexistent muzzle that gives them permanent breathing problems. My boyfriend decided to buy me a ball python as a surprise present for my birthday this month, he ordered a baby candino Male from Underground Reptiles and he arrived dead. I was devastated. I could smell him through the box, which was soaking wet inside and out. It had been raining but not that bad, and the problem I think was they didn’t seal the box with tape all the way - like they did with the replacement snake they forced us to get because they refused to give us a refund. They were sending us a male again but contacted us the day before his scheduled delivery saying he “wasn’t looking good” and would send a female free of charge. She arrived a quarter of his size - Alive - but looking extremely malnourished and underweight. You can SEE her spine and vertebrae lines, and she was so weak I showed photos to our reptile vet who I bought/rescued my subadult banana from and he told us to put her into a pedialyte soak and that she may not make it. They said she was a 2018 hatchling but our vet said she appears to be a few weeks old and has MAYBE had one feeding before. We’ve had a shitty experience with underground and would not recommend doing business with them, I only bring this story to light because I saw the company advertised in this video when showing snakes for sale online - I will NEVER do business with underground again, and I suggest anyone considering it to think twice, and to go for a local breeder or reptile rescue in your state/area. If you wanna see photos of my baby candinos condition you can dm me on ig: addistry_mind . We just got her this past weekend, she’s precious but it’s sad to see someone cruel enough to send out a snake in such a condition; I’ve seen baby snakes before duh, I spend endless hours watching snake hatching videos and watching baby updates on KZitem, but I’ve never seen a baby ball look like she does before. Anyways, great video and I 100% agree with everything you’ve said and stated 😂 it’s immoral to breed something knowing that it can and will cause a defect on the quality of life of the animal in some cases. Why risk that? When you know the answer to a problem, solve it. Don’t tip toe around it and say meh, it’s not that big of an issue 🤷♀️

Underground Reptiles is one of the worst places you could buy anything from. I know you BF probably didn't know that, so no fault to him. On Facebook, there are tons of Board of Inquiry groups. There is a BOI on the Fauna forum also. I always recommend people go and do research on the seller before they commit to buying any animals online. Horror story after horror story coming out of Underground Reptiles. Most of those big online pet sellers/pet stores are junk when it comes to animals. Not private breeders, but those stores like Underground Reptiles. They buy and flip a ton of animals, and don't do a whole lot with those animals. Just like BHB, had done in the past. And possibly still doing Next time search out a breeder of the type of animal you are looking for. You will probably even get a better deal and an actually healthy animal.. As for the sealing the box with tape. I've shipped hundreds of snakes. I never totally seal the box airtight. With a heat pack in the box you need the box to be able to breathe.. So as far as that's concerned they didn't do anything wrong by not sealing the box with tape.

It’s a shame how fast he went downhill and how selfish he got especially since it’s clear he cares more about the money and beauty of the snake rather than the physical/mental wellbeing. The poor baby bit himself thinking it was his food biting him back! That’s awful, he can’t even take his meal without running into hiccups!... how is a disabled snake that can be tricky to feed, because they struggle to strike & stay still, desirable!? All the spider morphs out there, bless them. Touching on what you said. When researching a BP as a pet before I got mine, the morphs weren’t really something I felt I needed to look in to (and it wasn’t readily available when reading up about the care of a BP anyway) I assumed they were just the different colours & patterns of the snake, like a dog breed comes in diff colours, and so it wasn’t important to me. I just wanted a pet snake. If I had cared about the aesthetics of the snake & wanted to research the diff morphs more, I would of learnt some new info. You have to look in a specific area for that info though, at least you did back then. Now the spider morphs neurological issues are more hot topic & the controversial subject is something you’ll stumble on without trying.

It is possible to breed healthy pugs, if you care more about breathing than how small the nose is. The same issue occurred in the King Charles, so many chose to breed against the small nose, recreating the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Thats great! But, *they should never have been bred that way to begin with!* There were generations of miserable dogs before *some* breeders bred back into the original look. There should be a line. There are many, many healthy German Shepherds, but there are also many with hips so low, they can hardly walk. The only purpose is for showing. The issue is that dog, cat, reptile, and all other forms of breeding are nearly unregulated. It creates animals that suffer even in captivity. Its cruel, and inhumane. ALL creatures should have a right to be treated with kindness. Its our job to protect them, no one else will. How do we accomplish that? No idea! But we should start at least trying to figure it out.

I think breeding any animal with defects that cause them significant trouble living or discomfort is wrong. As a pet owner is your responsibility to make sure they're healthy and happy. I wouldn't feel right purposely bringing animals into the world that lives every day in pain or misery. I mean imagine being born knowing someone orchestrated that because they thought you were pretty but all the while not being able to walk straight or eat normally. I would be pissed. Now as far as albinos and piebalds: if they aren't suffering in captivity then there is no reason why they shouldn't be bred. A good owner would make sure their animal would never be exposed to predators. Now with the light sensitivity if you can reasonably accommodate them then so be it. If they are living without pain or illness then there is no problem. My issue comes in where someone knowingly creates animals that have a high likelihood of suffering.
@charliemorgan5531

@@TheNemosdaddy What you're saying is absolute rubbish. Yes, abnormalities are "found in the wild." Yes, genetic defects exist. This kind of irresponsible animal breeding breaks my heart. (And as an autistic person i’m infuriated these people are making eugenics comparisons.) I’m just glad the poor snake you took in has someone so considerate and knowledgeable looking after him.
@Dorkella_
5 жыл бұрын
If anything, it's eugenics TO breed this morph. That's literally how dog breeding ended up. It started as mostly work/performance and health related, then it became about appearance. Many dog breeds can't do their original jobs because they're so messed up. It's so bad that there are working strains of breeds as well as show strains. And the dog show people have the gall to say that their breed standards for gait allow the judge to "see the dog in its original job". Have you seen a show German Shepherd run with its shortened rear legs? It's unnerving. There's no way that dog can run all day as it was originally bred to do. Sorry, rant over.
@renarddubois940

@@renarddubois940 I'm not a breeder, but arguing from theory, it seems plausible that while all animal husbandry might be eugenics, not all animal husbandry is irresponsible or inherently immoral. Ergo, not all kinds of eugenics are immoral. The consensus on there being morally relevant differences between humans and other animals makes the issue pretty trivial though, since we can just say that eugenics with regards to humans is immoral, but we'd still be stuck with not being able to think eugenics is inherently bad (assuming the premises).
@cooperolm9687

Taradoxxi The eugenics comparisons are so vile. There’s a huge difference between killing/forcefully sterilizing human beings, and letting animals with health issues that can be passed down live out their lives as comfortably as possible, just not being bred, something it does not have the intelligence to care about.

Also, who’s out here thinking that people are pro euthanizing disabled kids? No one (sane) wants to kill autistic kids. A snake simply having a disorder isn’t the problem. Just like humans, that snake should be given the same love and care as anyone else of its species. The issue is when you purposefully breed more of that disability. Kids with autism are not a problem. However, if you purposefully decide to give all children born to a specific lineage genetic disorders, and the kids have trouble surviving, but you keep forcing them to be born with these genetic issues because you think it’s cuter to have a disabled child...then that is cruel.

@@mira-leeestella5337 Amen. The issue is that people will go for an EXTREME opposite of a claim to both make it sound awful and as ridiculous as that extreme opposite. It's also a false equivalency. People aren't intentionally having sex with other people with heretical neurological disorders for a desired trait in their child (at least, I hope not). Breeding for Spider Ball Pythons however is breeding for a certain neurological trait that is detrimental to them. It's not even close to the same.

A few things, I have a science degree in Archeology. Your age and inexperience gives you the advantage of having fewer biases than older people. You've not been indoctrinated into any train of thought. You can look at these animals and give an opinion without prejudice. Remember that. I'd also like to point out that age doesn't equal knowledge or wisdom. Don't let anyone make you think otherwise. When my daughter started 4H with chickens, most of the people that taught me were preschoolers or kindergartners. They had older siblings or parents that taught them and they knew more than I or my daughter did. Age had nothing to do with knowledge and experience. I also worked with dogs for 10 years before going to college. A lot of those breeds are abominations, like the Pugs you mentioned. I love Border Collies. I'm old enough to remember the drama when Borders were accepted into the AKC. Traditional breeders were devastated that their healthy, happy, talented breed would fade when they started being bred just for looks. I agree with you completely. We shouldn't be breeding animals for appearance and money if the animal will suffer. Nature wouldn't allow it so why should we? Don't ever doubt yourself because of your age.
