Loved Brian Clough although, as a Liverpool supporter, hated Nottingham Forest when they beat us. But he needed Peter Taylor with him - they were a partnership. Am not at all convinced that he would have done any better for England than he did at Leeds,. His strength, with Peter T, was to build teams from scratch and knowing exactly what type of player his team needed and able to get the best out of those players. He wouldn't have been able to do that with England.

Exactly. Bringing two relatively small clubs, Derby County and Nottingham Forest, out of the Second Division (and Derby were near the bottom of Second Division when he took over), and to the League Championship is quite extraordinary. Then of course there were the two consecutive European Cups with Forest and the odd League Cup or two. I am a Southampton supporter of longstanding. We had two very fine managers in Ted Bates and Lawrie McMenemy (going back a few years here!). But Brian is unique. I suppose you have to say that Alec Ferguson's record is extraordinary, and Bill Shankly achieved great things at Liverpool. But Brian was quite exceptional, even in that company.

And the reason he didn't like Don Revie and Leeds was because they were dirty cheats . Yes they'd won this and that but they hadn't done it honeribly they done it bloody cheating . The ability to read the game and players (Dave McKay not needing to break a sweat ( and he was right he didn't need to, what a master stroke to bring him in!) stands out and the confidence, you need that young man, you need to believe in yourself to be able to instill that confidence in the players. What i liked about him was he was very cheeky in a playfull way. He really had a great personality especially in his younger days. He would say something outrageous then give the interviewer a look so you knew he wasn't being entirely serious. The game doesn't have characters like this now. Don't even compare Mourinhio who comes across as far less subtle and a piece of work. The only thing he's done that is remotely Clough esq is call himself special. That is something Clough did more than once.

Modern day football misses characters like Clough. The premier league today is an incredibly soulless affair and I keep track of results more out of habit than love for the sport. Managers and players alike are dull and can't be individuals and stick their head above the parapet without incurring the wrath of the general public and talking heads in the media. Interviews today are pointless in football. The standard mundane questions in which you already know the answer from manager or players alike. It's like a hive mind in which no one can think for themselves or be an individual anymore.

As a Scotsman and Liverpool fan, i think that Brian Clough should have been England Manager. He was the perfect man for the job but the English F.A. like our Scottish F.A. only want "yes" men. He did a fantastic job at Forrest and with Peter Taylor turned them into a top side. A lot of people didn't like him and thought him arrogant and big-headed but he was a fantastic motivator and a great Manager.

His comments today are as spot on as they were back then.

He was right about Don Revie...I was at the last home game against Sheffield United, so sad to see Brian lose it towards the end😥
