Her mom was wrong but I don’t think she deserves the hate she’s getting. She didn’t want her daughters only focus to be on her weight since it can be easy to become obsessed with weight again when recovering from an ED. Her daughter was proud of having overcome such a time and wanted to show it, her mom just didn’t know how to handle it and was too worried to see it was that and not her slipping back into those times.

i've said it before, people need to learn the compliment sandwich. it's fine to say so when a bride doesn't look good in a dress, lord knows there's no shortage of tacky ill-fitting wedding dresses, but you have to do it in a way that doesn't make the bride feel personally attacked. say something you like about it, then express your concerns, then pull it back with the silver lining. that way the bride hears where it falls short but has plenty to lean on if the positives outweigh the negatives for her.

Exactly. My best got engaged recently and I'm the maid of honour and will be with her dress shopping. We already talked a lot about what she wants and it's not something I would ever wear (she wants tattoo lace and most likely sleeves). But I can imagine her looking great in it, because it fits her romantic, creative personality. I will tell her nicely but honestly if I think a dress she tries on doesn't suit her, but I would never discourage her from a dress because it's not what I would have picked.

I understand--due to similar issues of a family member--the mom doesn't want the daughter to continue to place a placebo on her recovery. So many comments have stated the daughter has moved on and not the mom. We don't know that. Mom is there; we are not. There are plenty of people with eating disorders who have "the highs" where they temporarily feel good about themselves. Mom wants her to be okay ALL the time and make healthy decisions for herself. She may not be communicating it well, but it is VERY clear that is her wish for her daughter.

It's important to remember that the bride didn't just have body hang ups. She has an eating disorder. Yes she has done really well to fight it and is healthier now but stressful life events, such as a wedding, can trigger old unhealthy habits or develop new ones. I.e. she may have over ate before and then she starts starving herself to look the best she can in her dress. My auntie was anorexic and she lost her fight to it and I have seen the devastation that her passing has caused but it wasn't just a sudden thing. It was a constant battle over years and years. We do not know what this family has been through, we do not know if advice has been sought/given on how to handle the situation. I don't think the mom had bad intentions, I think she genuinely cares about her daughter. She also has two other daughters that she will want to protect. Eating disorders ruin lives, unless you have been in this situation yourself you cannot say how you would act

She kept repeating how beautiful her daughter was before and after she lost weight. And the bride was so happy to see her mom happy that it made me happy for both of them and for the rest of the family. They cared more for each other than for the dress. This is what I understood her to say: The daughter has been laser focused on losing weight. That kind of focus was necessary for successfully losing 75 pounds. When you choose your wedding dress, however, there is a larger purpose at hand. Don't use the "weight loss focus" to choose a dress for the "biggest day of your life." Use the "biggest day of your life focus" to choose a dress for the "biggest day of your life."

So to see someone else have the same issue is encouraging that it can be defeated. Accompany anxiety, depression, and PTSD, those four things can kick you in the face and it's only by the grace of God that I'm still going. I started EMDR therapy about a month ago and can feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Let this bride be an inspiration to others that eating does NOT have to consume and control your life! I understand where her mom is coming from by being so critical, but as someone who’s suffered from an ED and a few relapses, turning something as beautiful as this into only about her weight and the moms fears only makes it worse. I understand she’s trying to look out for her but at the same time she could send her daughter back into that dangerous place by bringing up her figure, her weight, and her appearance over and over and over again, especially after you see how happy she is. At that point, speaking about and bringing up her weight may cause her to become super self conscious when she may not have been concerned about it in the beginning. By bringing it up over and over can literally trigger old thoughts or behaviors that she may have struggled with before, rather than it helping her in any way.

To think it was the daughter's body and not the mother's.

Mama seems a bit manipulative. I think the mom may have some body issues of her own and projects them onto her daughter.

That mom is identifying too much with the struggling daughter. Obviously, the bride has gotten past her body issues. The mom needs to let go of it, too.

Lol. My maiden name is Bolden. I understand that her daughter had body issues in the past, but if the daughter have did the work to overcome that. Then the mother need to try to fight to get past it and move forward as well. Whether people want to acknowledge it or not, fear can keep you in a place that you don't want to be in. Or take you back to a place you have worked so hard to come and stay out of. And the mother acting that way could cause her daughter to go back into that mindset.

What’s wrong with picking a dress that makes you feel smaller if it makes you feel better about your weight loss?

Nothing wrong, but considering she had dealt with an eating disorder in the past, her mom just seems to be worried her daughter becomes obsessed with looking slim again. It is clear she loves her daughter and is just very worried that her preference for wearing a fitted dress might be some reminiscent of the obsession she had, and she just doesn't want her daughter to be sick again.

I don't like how she word it. But I get where she is coming from. The mom obviously saw one extreme of eating disorder in her daughter and doesn't want to see her go through another disorder in order to be skinny. She just want her to love herself, fat or skinny and I agree with mom, that is the most important!

I think picking a dress should be a shopping trip not an emotional roller coaster

Caring moms pays attention. This mom seemed like she was holding on to the past but she may just know and observe things that we can’t. I noticed everytime the bride to be turned to the side to look at herself in the mirror, she sucked her already flat belly in con-caved. Shes still struggling, the mom knows it and just wanted the best for her.

That mom is super focused on that weight and about her daughter wanting to enjoy her smallest size! Well, that smaller size is the reward for the hard work of loosing weight!!!
