I found the phrase “comeback kid” to be inspiring as it relates to resilience and perseverance. In the context of this record, I think of it mostly in terms of being able to overcome many heartaches and still keep believing in love. In playing around with the language, I realized there were a lot of ways to repurpose the word “comeback.” The song includes a couple of different “comebacks” like joking retorts: “the jerk store called and they’re running out of you” comes from a famous Seinfeld episode, and “i know you are but what am i?” is a classic schoolyard comeback. The “hail mary” in verse 2 is a reference to sports comebacks, trying to make a big play at the last minute to miraculously make your way to victory when it seemed all but impossible. This can happen in a relationship too, just making some ridiculous attempts to save the thing from falling apart when it seemed like all hope was lost. The trick of the song is that it’s not really about victory. The narrator is called “the comeback kid” because they are always begging their lover to “come back “ to them. The happy ending is when she finally learns to walk off the field and give up the game.
This is one of my favorite productions on the album. I love the way the piano part and synthesizer part weave around each other, and the swirling around the “come backs.”

Lyrics:
What would I say
If I saw you again?
Would I say “the jerk store called
And they’re running out of you”?
What would I do
If I knew how it would end?
I wouldn’t have worked so hard
Or kept on coming back to you
Well, somewhere in a parallel universe
You don’t know my name
But now I’m the “Comeback Kid”
And you know that I can’t quit just saying:
“Come back
Come back
Come back
Come back
To me”
Hail Mary, full of grace
When I drove a thousand miles
To watch you run away and hide
“I’m sorry” is all you can say
But I said “I know you are,
But what am I?”
And somewhere in a parallel universe
Everything is the same
But I’ve got a sense of shame
And know when I should stop praying
For you to come back
Come back
Come back
Come back
Come on, come back
Come back
Come back
Come back
To me
