Bridgnorth Castle in Shropshire sits on the edge of a beautiful market town not far from the Welsh border. Perched atop a natural cliff, the castle is in a great defensive position and sits alongside the might River Severn.
Bridgnorth Castle was important for a century or so after the Conquest, but as the Welsh border pushed west, it became less of a vital defensive outpost. The castle was a royalist stronghold during the Civil War and was slighted after it fell. Attempts to destroy the keep failed, and what remains now leans at 15 degrees - four times the angle of the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Looking at it, it's hard to see how it stays as upright as it is!
