I am very impressed by your analysis of what I consider having seen it on numerous occasions the much maligned Brigadoon. Away with you regarding the accents as Kelly & Charisse in their beautiful performances more than compensate for any discrepancies in that department. I find like the village itself Brigadoon magical and thank you once again for highlighting this Lerner & Lowe masterpiece.

Thank you for the great video analysis. I just watched Brigadoon for the first time and was flabbergasted by how terrible the accents were and how claustrophobic the sets felt. I'm sure if I had watched the musical as a child, I would have enjoyed it more.

Thank you. I truly appreciate the feedback. I agree with your opinion, claustrophobic is a good description.

Beautiful choreography, costumes and musical numbers. Speaking of accents, I love your Scottish accent, Carley.

Just wondering if you know if the Broadway production (or the City Centre revival) used real pipers in the scene with the meeting of the clans and the wedding scene? I agree that scene drags a lot, although I think that was supposed to be the jaw dropping climatic production number. If they had filmed that scene on location, yes, it would have been amazing. But if they used real pipers in a Broadway theater, wow! That would have blown the roof off the place, and a New York audience would have appreciated pipers. Just wondering if pipers made the original conception of the meeting of the clans more impactful.

Sorry, I can't say. Having said that I like bagpipes, but many in a small theatre would be too much for most people.

@@vintagesoup79 Yes, many pipers in an indoor space would be amazing! A friend of mine owned a family bar up in Inwood many years ago. As a favor, his county's pipers visited on St Patrick's Day after the parade. Wow, an unforgettable sound! Thanks for the feedback! 🎭🗽

Audiences in 1950's America agreed with you. The film was not received well and was eclipsed by the studio's second tiered musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell with Michael Kidd as the choreographer. While neither film was shot on location it was easier to be comfortable in the mostly indoor sets of the American Rockies in 7 for 7 as opposed to feeling cheated in not seeing the "real" Scotland in Brigadoon. Most Americans in that era would never get to travel there and were hoping to see the authentic heather on the rugged hills in glorious Technicolor. Musically the songs in Brigadoon were good but not really memorable as sung by the actors and were not re-recorded by the "crooners" of the era so there was not a lot of radio or TV play to get people to buy the record or sell the movie. Movie audiences liked both Gene Kelly and Van Johnson but somehow the fairy tale romance just didn't fit their established movie personalities. And, really, the one day every 100 years is a LOT to swallow. I have left out Cyd Charisse because she could not successfully carry a movie on her own like Judy Garland or Jane Powell or even Esther Williams. GREAT dancer, always dubbed singer, and OK in a subordinate role as an actress. Moving on... As for the secondary roles, who WERE they anyway? Where was Scotland's Finlay Currie, the most amazing profile ever? Is that wedding STILL going on? Finally... There wasn't enough testosterone in Brigadoon for American audiences in the story, the dancing, or the songs. My ex would wander off to his woodworking tools when the movie aired on Turner Classic Movies. It's probably the testosterone levels in most of Sean Connery's movies that cause us Americans not to give a darn about his never losing his Scottish accent in any movie.

A very well investigated review of that much maligned musical “Brigadoon”. One song was covered by numerous recording artists was “Almost like being in Love”. I believe both Kelly and Charisse’s performances were magical much like the village. The artistry of Lowe’s music and the poignancy of Lerner’s lyrics are well to the fore in making this a tartan delight.
